Hello!
We are happy unbirthday (hUb), a two-person art unit that fashions
newspaper dresses and performs/strolls in them throughout the city. We
have held these guerilla stages across Japan, in 6 prefectures and a total
of 15 different cities.
This time, we are planning a collaboration project with a San Francisco,
U.S.-based artist William Wang and are thinking to bring together our
newspaper dresses with his paper art in a film.
William Wang is a designer and artist working with paint and paper. He is
interested in urban spaces, drawing inspiration in his works from cities
around the world and places he has lived. His works have been exhibited/
collected in both the United States and Japan. He recently had a solo
exhibit in Little Tokyo in Los Angeles this April.
The happy unbirthday (hUb) x William Wang (hUb x WW hereafter)
collaboration project recently received a grant from the Energia Culture
and Sports Foundation to film throughout the 5 prefectures of the
Chugoku Region in Japan (Hiroshima, Tottori, Shimane, Yamaguchi and
Okayama). While we were able to receive the grant, we were only awarded
100,000 yen (roughly 1,000 USD). This is, of course, not enough to call
William to Japan and make our trip through the 5 prefectures.
So, we need your help!
We have planned many rewards, so if you could please help support our
project, we would greatly appreciate any help we can get!
We plan to hold showings of the completed film in the 5 prefectures of the
Chugoku Region and in Los Angeles, etc. in the United States! (The
showing locations/dates have not yet been fixed, but we are thinking to
finish the film around the end of the year, so the showings would be
sometime next spring.) Please let us know if you have any
recommendations for showing/filming locations! Also, if any of you in the
Chugoku Region would be kind enough to host us for the night, we would
more than appreciate your help – so please contact us! We are currently
budgeted for the bare minimum for this CAMPFIRE project, and these
funds do not include our living expenses for the month-long filming
session. Any amount of help you can give us would be greatly appreciated!
At the same time, as a project for the Chugoku Region, we are hoping to
publicize the beautiful landscape and people of the region with this film.
So, for those of you in the region, we ask for your support to help us
promote the beauty of your towns!
And for those of you who aren’t associated with the Chugoku Region,
please help support our project to bring together these Japanese and
American artists to create a new world of paper performance and
sculpture and foster an exchange of culture and art!

26

happy unbirthday (hUb), formed April 1, 2010, has created artwork based
on the theme of “sparkling moments in everyday life.”
Something out of place appears in a familiar landscape.
Surprise is born.
You look around.
And just for a minute, you share a strange spatial experience with
“strangers” walking through the city.
A new kind of awareness is born in the familiar landscape.
As art fuses into everyday life, everyday life becomes just a little more
special.
hUb members, riyo and yuko, both have a background in architecture.
From there, we developed the idea that, in addition to the hardscape of
the city (the physical space created from buildings, nature, etc.), the
softscape of the city (the atmosphere or mood of the city as created from
human movement, light and space) can also be designed. We started
creating our works with the purpose of creating this kind of softscape
through our bodies in the space of the city.
As newspaper people, we simply “stroll” through the city in slow,
pantomime-like movements to create an “other world” kind of space.
Above is a link to a movie filmed by a photographer when we participated
in Tori-Art, an arts festival in Tottori this January.
A complete list of our works can be found below in our profile, but as one
of our first collaboration projects, we have participated in an artist-in-
residence program for a week and collaborated with the architect group
403 architecture to put on a three-day exhibit depicting the birth and
growth of these newspaper people. A few photographs and a film can be
seen above in the Japanese text.
Because our works have mostly been guerilla-style, we have not had much
media coverage heretofore. However, because Tori-Art (held this Jan.) was
our first official art event participation, we were able to be interviewed in
the Asahi Shimbun, Yomiuri Shimbun and San-in Chuo Shinpo at that time.
In February and March, we also received newspaper coverage from the
Atami Shimbun. (photos above)
What we realized from making our art was that each performance in the
different cities produced a different kind of space. Apart from our
exhibitions, our guerilla-style performance basically does not change with
any city we perform in. Of course, the design of our dresses change based
on the season and with each stage, however, we always perform in the
same style slow, pantomime-like movements that use no words, enjoying
the word-less communication that arises with the city and its people. And
it is because of the unique characteristics of the cities and its people that
the spaces (works) produced in them are all special and unique. Above are
a few of the photos of the cities we have performed in. (From top:
Shinagawa station (Tokyo) in the morning, train from Kawasaki station
(Kanagawa), shopping street in Nagoya (Aichi))
Lastly, with this project, we would like to focus on the Chugoku Region,
and through collaboration with William, his art and his unique style, we
hope to create spaces with rich stories within a new film piece.

13

William Wang is a San Francisco, U.S.-based artist who creates delicate
paper artwork.
He also has a background in architecture, and his works draw inspiration
from the spaces of cities and nature.
“My work is an exploration of the changing relationship between organic
and artificial spaces. I find inspiration from the places I have lived and
draw from experiences with both sprawling suburban towns and dense
city environments. Moving between materials allows me to shift my
perspective on a particular theme and discover additional layers of
information. I'm often drawn to the relationships between spaces, voids,
air, the underground, light and shadow.
I currently alternate between paper and wood, materials very different in
density, tension, and flexibility. There's a unique bond between the two,
similar to a relationship between parent and child. The two paired together
speak to me about the relationships between nature and human history.”
William held his first solo exhibit at a gallery in Los Angeles in April this
year. (2014 - Current “Monochromatic,” Opodz, Little Tokyo, Los Angeles,
CA)
Above is a video of the making of his work. William’s other activities
include founding an international artist’s collaborative called PaperFlat with
riyo from hUb in 2012.
http://paperflat.com/
As one of the projects for PaperFlat, William has also created collaboration
pieces with riyo called ArtMail in 2012 and 2013. In this project, William
and riyo sent postcard-sized art pieces to one another for about a month,
both through the mail and digitally by email. They then worked on one
another’s inspirations and recorded the history of each piece. Each
artwork was then given a unique QR code and the work’s history was
engraved into the unique website dedicated to each piece.
http://paperflat.com/works/artmail/ (Photos above)
William has also participated in a number of group exhibits:
2013 ~ present: Exhibit at Nihiru Gyu Gallery, Nishiogikubo (Tokyo)
May, 2013: PaperFlat The Hand Exhibit at Gallery Mu-Rung, Nishiogikubo
(Tokyo)
March, 2013: Exhibit at Gallery Yellow Passion, Yaizu (Shizuoka)
2004: Exhibit at the Marin Society of Artists in Marin, CA
William’s website can be visited from the link below.
His works are all amazing, so please take a look!

Background.
This collaboration project was begun as an effort to bring together William’s focus on the relationship of the city and nature and the unique stories that lie in his pieces with the performance style and paper dresses made by hUb to create a new kind of artwork/ space/ film.
This project submitted to CAMPFIRE has received a grant from the Energia Sports and Culture Foundation and will be a film shot in the Chugoku Region, where riyo (hUb) currently lives. (She lives in Yonago in Tottori Prefecture in the Chugoku Region.) In Yonago, hUb has exhibited and performed for Tori-Art this January. And, while our experiences in Yonago have not yet been very extensive, we believe we were able to communicate and interact with the people in Yonago through our art. In this new collaboration project, we hope to do the same with the people of each prefecture in the Chugoku Region, get to know the area better and, while it would be from an outside perspective, we would like to make a work of art based on the Chugoku Region by bringing together our three distinct perspectives.
At the same time, because we (hUb) have mainly produced artwork guerilla-style, we have focused more on the space of the actual performance, rather than representation through photos, movies or other mediums. (All of hUb’s records have been photographed/filmed by friends who kindly worked us into their schedules to film and there have been times where the two of us simply went out into the city without anybody to record our work). While we do intend to focus on the actual time/space of the performance and our communication with everyone in this collaboration piece as well, we wanted to weave a story and a film with our work in the final piece to create something new and appealing for a wider audience.
At the same time, we were highly inspired by William’s passion towards the city and spaces of people and nature. We believe that, through collaboration with his paper artwork and his unique outlook, we would be able to create something even more exciting – and that is how this project started.

Goals.
What we are considering for the collaboration piece is a film composed of stop motion animation and movies melding together William’s paper sculptures with our performance.
With this collaboration piece, we will be dedicating 5 days per prefecture for the filming. Two days will be spent to get to know each city and the next three days will be spent filming and creating. Five days is an extremely short amount of time, so factoring in a little extra time, we hope to shoot the film over the course of a month.
Through our travels across the region and the communication that would be born from it, we hope to better understand the Chugoku Region through both an inside and an outside perspective, to discover the region’s unique charms and to help communicate this to the world.

Dreams.
As with the PaperFlat collaborative established with William, we are currently thinking to create a platform where artists from various countries can exchange ideas and collaborate on projects. We hope to realize this project as one such international art collaboration project as well. At the same time, if possible, we hope to realize this hUb x William Wang project in both Japan and the United States, highlight the unique qualities of the cities and peoples in Japan and the U.S. and foster an exchange of culture and art.
The dream of this project is thus to realize a new kind of art-making through collaboration and an exchange of culture, values and ideas.
And, for this project in particular, by filming in the Chugoku Region from both an inside and outside perspective, and by showing the film in both the U.S. and Japan, we hope to pursue a new kind of collaborative artistic expression and exchange.

25

The funds for the project include our travel expenses (bringing William to Japan & the three of us traveling through the 5 prefectures in the Chugoku Region), supply costs (for making the newspaper dresses and William’s paper artwork) and filming/editing costs (budgeted at the bare minimum at the moment).
Because our first priority at the moment is to realize the project, we have not included our living expenses during the production period into the budget. So, any kind of help would help us tremendously, and should we be able to receive more funds than we expect, we may even be able to increase the scope of our projects and our rewards. Our necessary expenses include the following:
Travel expenses 456,300 yen
Supplies 90,000 yen
Filming/editing 100,000 yen
Total 646,300 yen
(Please email us if you need a further detailed account of the expenses)
Because 100,000 yen of this will be sponsored by Energia, the remaining necessary funds would be 546,300 yen.
Considering the fact 20% of this will be paid to CAMPFIRE if the project succeeds, we would like to ask for support for 682,875 yen.

26

The following are the returns we are considering should the project succeed.
Thank you email from the 3 artists (English & Japanese)

Anybody kind enough to host us in the Chugoku Region, please contact us!
We would appreciate any and all food, too!
We would also love to hear from you – any ideas, questions, comments, anything!
So please send us an email at: questions@paperflat.com
Lastly, about the project schedule, if this CAMPFIRE project succeeds, we hope to film the project between August and October of 2014, edit between November to December and hold showings of the completed film starting the spring of next year.
This is a very special project intended to connect cultures and people through the mundane, but very subtle expressions of paper, and we greatly appreciate all of your support!
Thank you so much for your interest!
