The director was born in 1972 in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. After graduating from Musashino Art University, he became a graphic designer at an advertising production company. He then left this job and became a freelance film director. He has worked on the production of numerous commercials in Japan. While working on these commercials he set out to produce experimental films. TEXTISM (2003) was made with a technique that combined live action and animation and it won the Grand Prix at the Japan Image Forum Festival. After this, he moved from experimental films to also making short films. Doron (2006), which was a comical depiction of an audition, won the Grand Prix at film festivals in Spain, South Korea and Canada. BABIN (2008) portrayed the story of a man who had been buried in the ground up to his waist. It won two prizes at the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland. aramaki (2009), which is the story of a man just before he goes deep into a forest to commit suicide, was nominated in the short film category at the Berlin International Film Festival. Shikasha (2010) depicts a mother and child that have been buried in the ground and the investigators searching for them. This film was invited to the Cannes Film Festival Directors’ Fortnight. Currently, he is energetically working on short films and at the same time he is looking a few years into the future as he is also planning a feature film. 663114 (2011) comes after the recent major earthquake which struck Japan. There is a desire as an artist to make something to leave behind and it is a piece of work that has been made with a feeling like that of a prayer.
