織って染めた布を

衣装に仕上げていく

和裁士さんの助けを借りなければ、今回の衣装を仕上げることは不可能でした。

衣装のイメージは、神社の神官の浄衣。

龍を表現したいので、浄衣の後ろ裾は10メートルに。

和裁などしたことがない私は、和裁士やまぐちようこ氏に教えを受けながら仕立てを始めることにしました。

浄衣をお借りしてすべての寸法を測り、一枚の長い長い布をどのように加工していくのか計画を立てました。

やまぐちようこ氏は和裁の達人。

いや和裁だけでなく布を変化させていく達人…いわゆる布の魔術師という感じです。

仕立てを全く知らない私でしたので、まずは着物の仕立て方について、彼女からレクチャーを受けました。

仕立て始めるまでの準備が本当に大変でした。

地直しをしていくだけで一日が過ぎていく日もありました。

そして

型紙というか…

どこを切るか見取り図のようなものを作って裁断。裁断を間違えれば全て台無しです。

かなり慎重に…

この裁断が一番、気をつかうところでした。実際、やまぐちようこ氏もこの裁断がとても大変なんだということをおっしゃっていました。

布を断ったら後は縫うだけなのですが、とにかく私は本当の運針は知りません。だって学校では教えないんですから…。ひたすら練習して、それからやっと少し縫えるようになりました。

そして

やまぐちようこ氏恐るべし！

浄衣として仕上げるには首回りを立ち上げなければならなかったり、袖に紐をつけたりしなければならなかったのですが見本の浄衣をじっくりと見ながら、彼女は言いました。

『ホームセンターへ行きましょう！』

襟の中に入れた芯は、梱包用の段ボールテープ！

袖に通した紐は細い綿ロープ！

首元に使った紐も綿ロープをボンドで固め…

やまぐち氏のアイディアには脱帽でした。

まるでホンモノの浄衣のような仕上がりに。

さらにやまぐち氏は、衣装のシチュエーションや表現者の動きにまで想像が及び、衣装が美しく見えるにはどうしたらいいのかまで考えてくださいました。

ただ、縫い上げるところまでを教えるだけでないところが彼女の素晴らしいところ。

それは彼女がいくつもバレエの衣装を作ってきた人でもあったからなのです！

このたびの衣装の大きな助力となりました。

Making a costume after traditionally dyeing the hand woven fabric.

It would have been impossible to finish this costume without the help of professional japanese tailor Mrs. Yoko Yamaguchi. 

 The costume design was based on the clothes that Japanese shrine priest’s wear for purification.

The dancers wearing the costumes represent a dragon, so the costumes must have a 10 meter long trail.

I had never done this kind of costume, so I asked Japanese tailoring specialist Yoko Yamaguchi for help. 

The preparation before we started tailoring was really hard.

I received a lecture on Japanese Kimono making.

There were full days spent only on checking and getting every inch of the 30 meter long fabric ready. 

Making the pattern was also difficult.

Making a mistake with the scissors would mean to have to start all over.

 Be very careful ...

There is a special technique with the needle for sawing kimonos. After practicing for a while I was finally able to start with the costume.

We used material that you can find in the home center for creating the collar of the costume.

Mrs. Yamaguchi who also has experience creating ballet costumes, put into consideration that this costume was going to be worn by dancers.  

The result is this pure costume that through simplicity and tradition evokes the image of a god awakening.
