ぼくたちはピクニックで坂本九の「上を向いて歩こう」を何度も歌った。鎮魂歌になることを願って。それはこの歌がどん底の中で人を励ますNo.1の曲だと思ったから。でも、映画にするに当たり、著作権の許諾を取るために八大コーポレーションの中村力丸社長と交渉するうちに、新しい曲が必要だと思った。社長曰く「上を向いて歩こうは失恋の歌である。災害の苦しみを慰めるための歌ではない。」「全米でNo.1のチャートを獲得したスキヤキソングは上を向いて歩こうではない。歌詞が全く違うから。」曲だけが一人歩きしている「上を向いて歩こう」について制作者側の意見を初めて聞いた。ぼくたちはそろそろ新しい「上を向いて歩こうが」必要だと思った。奴隷制度、原爆投下、9.11同時多発テロ、東日本大震災、未来のカタストロフへの呼びかけを歌った。21世紀の上を向いて歩こう♪空を⾒上げた。濁りのない輝く⻘が広がっていた。ぼくたちは最⾼に気分が良かった。でもアメリカの⿊⼈たちは気分が滅⼊っていた。ブルースという⾳楽がここから⽣まれた。空を⾒上げた。のっぺりとした平⾯に包まれていた。強い光が空を覆い尽くした。光は世界を飲み込み崩壊させた。⿊い液体が空から落ちて⼤地を⿊く染めた。 空を⾒上げた。CGで描いたようなアニメーションが始まった。ジャンボジェットが⾼層ビルに突っ込んだ。ぼくはテレビの⽣中継でそれを⾒ていた。⾚ワインのボトルはいつしか空になった。 空を⾒上げた。鉛の巨⼤な壁が⽴ち塞がっていた。突き上げる強いチカラ、⾶ばされそうな横揺れ。凍える空気の中で粉雪が舞っていた。ぼくは3時間歩いて家に帰った。 空を⾒上げた。まっさらで嘘のない⻘が広がっていた。みんなを誘ってピクニックに⾏こうかな。今、世界では何が起きているのだろう。ぼくたちの現在地を確かめる旅に出よう。
