医学部までの道のり

はじめまして。現在、イギリスのアバディーン大学医学部に在学中の原田朱莉です。幼い頃から人の役に立つ医療の道に憧れ、高校卒業後は日本国内外で医療翻訳やボランティア活動に取り組んできました。将来は日本で認知症ケアや地域医療を支える医師として、人々の健康に貢献したいと考えています。

幼少期から、医師は人を治せる最も素敵な職業だと考えていました。海外の医学部で学ぶことは、視野を広げ、より良い医療を日本に届けるために必要な経験だと考えています。しかし、海外留学には高額な学費がかかり、今年度の学費を継続して支払うには年間学費 £50,100（約984万円）の半額、約500万円が必要です。このプロジェクトでは、この目標達成を目指しています。

高校では医療に関わるクラブに所属し、1年生の夏休みに東京都立多摩総合医療センターの感染症科でインターンシップの機会をいただきました。本田仁先生のチームの一員として病棟回診や症例検討に参加する中で、医師は知識だけでなく、責任感、思考力、共感、チームワークが求められることを実感しました。患者の一人ひとりの生活に影響を与える仕事の重みを肌で感じ、この経験は、私が医師として人々の生活に真に寄り添いたいという思いを強めました。

高校三年生の時には、NPO法人Hands On Tokyoを通じて地域ボランティア活動に参加し、その功績が認められ「Youth Leadership Award」を受賞しました。この経験から、リーダーシップとは指示するだけでなく、周囲を支え、励ましながら成果を生み出すことだと学びました。その後、地域のクリニックで新型コロナウイルスワクチン接種会場の通訳ボランティアを務め、言語や意思疎通が患者との信頼関係にどれほど重要であるかを体感しました。この経験は、国際的な医療に関わる意義や、自分が医療を通して社会に貢献する姿勢をさらに確かにしました。

• 医学部入学後：

アバディーン大学の医学部はイギリス国内で高い評価を受けており、The Guardian "Best UK universities for medicine – league table" 2025年度では一位になっております。こちらから見れます。

去年は、医学部一年生ながらMCG × UoA Healthcare Equity Case Competition 2025において1位を受賞しました。

米国の医療保険制度（ACA）廃止を想定した包括的な医療改革プランを多国籍チームで作成し、コスト、アクセス、弱者支援を考慮する中で、政策レベルの問題解決能力やチームワークの重要性を学びました。この経験は、臨床にとどまらず、社会全体に影響を与える医師になりたいという考えをさらに強めました。

また、現在は九州大学医学部今井研究室にて、神経回路の発達や神経生理学に関する研究インターンを行っています。生体マウス脳を用いた実験を通じて、脳の未知の領域に挑む基礎研究の重要性を学び、認知症ケアの改善には科学的知見と共感の両方が必要であると実感しました。

さらに、大学内のAberdeen Student Society for Academic Medicine (ASSAM)では委員として活動し、学生研究の普及や中高生へのアウトリーチを行っています。学術活動を社会に還元することの大切さを学び、医師として社会に貢献する姿勢を育んでいます。

昨年はClinical Skills "OSCE" という国内の医学部でもお馴染みの臨床試験で”Merit＂という高評価を得ました。そしてStudent Selected Component という自分の興味のあるテーマを選び、グループ分けされて、発表と論文を書く講座で”A＂という最高評価と”Merit＂を得ました。私の論文は妊娠中の精神疾患がどう退治に影響するかについて書きました。もし興味のある方はここから読めます。

プロジェクト立ち上げの背景

海外の医学部で学ぶことは、自分の視野を広げ、より良い医療を日本に届けるために必要な経験だと考えました。しかし、海外留学には高額な学費がかかります。貯金だけでは足りない部分を、クラウドファンディングを通して応援していただければ幸いです。

このプロジェクトで実現したいこと：

アバディーン大学医学部での学びを継続し、今年度の在籍手続きを完了するために、年間学費 £50,100（約984万円）の半額にあたる約500万円(£20,050)の支援を目標としています。この金額を納入することで、正式に学生として登録され、学びを継続することが可能になります。

• 生活費と交通費は母の仕送り、自身が現地でアルバイト

将来のビジョン

私の夢は、日本の認知症ケアの質を向上させることです。現在の日本のケア体制は、まだ十分に人間中心のアプローチが取られているとは言えません。アルツハイマー病やその他の認知症の患者さんは、しばしば「病気としてのみ」扱われ、その人自身の人生の歴史や希望、尊厳が十分に考慮されていません。多くの介護者にとって病気についての理解が十分でないこともあり、日々の長期ケアの実践では生活の質を守ることが十分になされていない場合があります。患者さんが安心でき、他者と意味のある交流をし、目的や喜びを持って生活できる環境づくりにも十分な配慮がなされていません。新しい治療法の研究も重要ですが、認知症ケアは医療だけに留まってはなりません。日常生活の支援、社会福祉制度、在宅ケア、そして特に老人ホームでのケア管理の改善が必要です。私は、政策立案に関わり、ケアホームの基準を向上させ、科学的根拠に基づいた思いやりある認知症治療を推進したいと考えています。「認知症があるから楽しめない」という視点を変え、「喜びを作る」「安心できる場所を提供する」「生活の質を守る」といったケアを当たり前にすることが目標です。認知症の有病率が急速に増加している今、個々の人間性を尊重し、生活の質と幸福を最優先に考える、包括的で思いやりのあるケア体制の構築が必要だと考えています。

My Journey to Medical School

Hello, my name is Julie Harada, and I am currently studying medicine (MBChB) at the University of Aberdeen in the United Kingdom. Since childhood, I have dreamed of becoming a doctor and contributing to people’s health. After graduating from high school, I pursued medical translation work and volunteer activities both in Japan and abroad. My ultimate goal is to become a physician in Japan who can improve dementia care and strengthen community healthcare.

From an early age, I was fascinated by the idea that doctors could heal people. In high school, I joined a pre-medical club and had the opportunity to shadow physicians at Tokyo Metropolitan Tama Medical Center under Dr. Hitoshi Honda in the Infectious Diseases Department. Being welcomed as part of the team and participating in rounds and case discussions taught me that being a doctor requires not only knowledge, but also responsibility, critical thinking, empathy, and teamwork. Experiencing the real impact a physician has on patients’ lives strengthened my determination to make a meaningful difference in healthcare.

During my senior year of high school, I represented my school through the NPO Hands On Tokyo, volunteering in the community. For this work, I was honored with the Youth Leadership Award, which affirmed my ability to create meaningful change through leadership. Later, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I volunteered as a medical interpreter at a local vaccination center. Supporting communication between patients and healthcare workers showed me how small actions, like facilitating language, can be crucial to trust and effective healthcare. These experiences reinforced my desire to study medicine internationally. Studying medicine abroad allows me to gain experiences and perspectives that I can bring back to Japan to positively impact patients’ lives.

My achievements at medical school:

The University of Aberdeen School of Medicine is highly ranked in the UK, and in The Guardian "Best UK Universities for Medicine – League Table 2025" it was placed #1 in the UK.

During my studies, I have already been fortunate to gain significant experiences:

• In 2025, as a first year medic my team and I won 1st Place at the International MCG × UoA Healthcare Equity Case Competition. Our team proposed a comprehensive reform plan for U.S. healthcare in the event of a repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), balancing cost, accessibility, market stability, and support for vulnerable populations. This experience strengthened my skills in policy innovation, interdisciplinary teamwork, and global healthcare perspectives.

• Currently, I am a summer research intern at Kyushu University (Imai Laboratory), conducting experiments on neural circuit development and neurophysiology. This work has shown me how much is still unknown about the brain and the importance of bridging basic research with clinical care, deepening my commitment to improving dementia care through both scientific knowledge and human-centered practice.
  I also serve as a committee member of the Aberdeen Student Society for Academic Medicine (ASSAM), promoting student research and outreach to secondary school students. This experience has taught me the importance of connecting academic medicine to society and giving back to the community.

• Why I Started This Project：

Studying medicine abroad is an invaluable opportunity to broaden my horizons and bring back better medical practices to Japan. However, tuition fees for international students are extremely high. While I plan to take out a bank loan, have applied for scholarships, and receive some support from part-time work and my family, it is still not enough. That is why I am asking for your support through this crowdfunding project.

Project Goal：

To continue my studies at the University of Aberdeen School of Medicine and complete registration for this academic year, I aim to raise 5,000,000 JPY (approximately £25,050), which is half of the annual tuition fee of £50,100 (≈ 9.84M JPY). Paying this amount will allow me to be officially enrolled as a student and continue my medical education.

• Future Vision

My dream is to transform dementia care in Japan, where the current system still lacks a truly human-centered approach. Patients with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia are often treated primarily as their illness, rather than as individuals with their own life histories, preferences, and dignity. I believe too little attention is given to creating environments where patients can feel safe, engage meaningfully with others, and maintain a sense of purpose and joy. While medical research on new treatments is important, dementia care must go beyond medicine. Daily living support, social welfare systems, home care, and especially care home management must be improved. My goal is to contribute to policy development, enhance standards for care homes, and promote compassionate, evidence-based dementia treatment in Japan. I want to change the perspective that dementia patients cannot enjoy life and instead ensure care prioritizes “creating joy,” “providing safe spaces,” and preserving quality of life. With high dementia prevalence, it is crucial to establish a system that is holistic, compassionate, and centered on humanity.
