明治大学書道研究部

はじめまして、明治大学書道研究部です。 私たちは明治大学唯一の公認書道サークルとして、70年以上の長きにわたり、先人たちが築き上げた「書」の伝統を受け継いできました。

静寂の中で己と向き合う「古典」の鍛錬。全身を使って巨大な紙に想いをぶつける「書道パフォーマンス」。 この静と動、伝統と革新の両輪こそが、私たちの誇りです。

今、書道は大きな転換点を迎えようとしています。 いよいよ来年、日本の「書道」はユネスコ無形文化遺産への登録が見込まれています。世界が日本の伝統文化に熱い視線を注ぐ、まさにその前夜とも言えるこのタイミング。

私たちはこの歴史的な潮流の最前線に立ち、ハワイ「第30回ホノルルフェスティバル」という大舞台に挑みます。書道を現地の方に体験していただくブースを出展したり、迫力ある字で多くの人の胸を熱くする書道パフォーマンスを行ったりする予定です。 これは単なる学生の思い出作りではありません。ユネスコ無形文化遺産への登録の一助になればとの思いからの挑戦です。

私たちが目指すのは、言葉の壁を超え、現地の空気に触れ、日本の伝統文化がいかにエキサイティングで、熱く、カッコいいものであるかを世界へ証明することです。 確固たる伝統への敬意と誇りを胸に、日本の「書」をハワイの空の下で躍動させたいのです。

しかし、学生の力だけでは、海を渡りこの夢を実現するには限界があります。 私たちの筆に、皆様の想いを乗せていただけないでしょうか。 書道が世界へ羽ばたくこの時代に、その新たな歴史の1ページを、どうか私たちと一緒に作っていただけないでしょうか。 皆様の熱いご支援を、心よりお願い申し上げます。

〜From the Classroom to the World〜

たった10人で立った小さなステージから、世界へ。
教室の片隅で生まれた「書道パフォーマンス」の軌跡

時計の針を2022年に戻します。 世界中が新型コロナウイルスという見えない壁に覆われ、大学のキャンパスから学生の姿が消えたあの頃。 合宿は中止、展覧会は縮小。マスクに覆われた閉塞感が、私たち明治大学書道研究部を覆っていました。

「書道パフォーマンス、やってみない？」

始まりは、教室の片隅で部員がふとこぼした一言。 しかし、決して順風満帆なスタートではありませんでした。「伝統ある書道部がパフォーマンス？」という戸惑いもあったのか、最初はメンバーを集めることさえ難航しました。

ようやく実現した初めての公演。 舞台に立った部員は、わずか10人ほど。 ステージも小さく、手探りの中でのデビューでした。 それでも、音楽に合わせて全身で筆を走らせた瞬間、私たちは確信しました。「私たちが求めていた熱さはこれなんだ」と。

そこから、私たちの地道な挑戦が始まりました。 地域のイベントに出向いて筆を振るい、時にはテレビ番組の撮影に協力し、一つひとつの舞台で全力を出し切る。そんな愚直な活動を積み重ねるうちに、少しずつ、しかし確実に、私たちの輪は広がっていきました。

そして数年後。 かつて10人で立った私たちは、気づけば多くの仲間と共に、学園祭の一番大きなメインステージに立っていました。 目の前に広がるのは、溢れんばかりの満員の観客。 かつての「教室の片隅」の一言が、数えきれないほどの人々の心を震わせる光景に変わったのです。

昨年度は、その活動がついに海を越え、初めて「ホノルルフェスティバル」に参加。 この功績が認められ、大学からは「学生部長賞」という名誉ある賞をいただくこともできました。私たちの選んだ道は、間違っていなかった。そう背中を押された瞬間でした。

そして今年。 私たちは昨年の経験を糧に、さらに進化したパフォーマンスで第30回ホノルルフェスティバルに挑みます。 小さなステージから始まったこの物語を、ハワイの地で、最高のフィナーレへ。

これは、明治大学書道研究部の、そしてコロナ禍を乗り越え、ゼロから伝統を創り上げた私たちの、魂の集大成です。

UNESCO Recognition is on the Horizon. 
Taking Japanese "Shodo" to the World! 
Meiji University Japanese Calligraphy Club

Hello, we are the Meiji University Japanese Calligraphy Club. As the only official calligraphy club at Meiji University, we have inherited the traditions of "Shodo" (Japanese Calligraphy) built by our predecessors for over 70 years.

We practice "Classics" (Koten) facing ourselves in silence. We also perform "Calligraphy Performance," throwing our passion onto giant paper using our whole bodies. This blend of stillness and motion, tradition and innovation, is our pride.

Now, Shodo is facing a major turning point. Next year, Japanese Calligraphy is expected to be registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The world is turning its eyes to Japan's traditional culture right now.

Standing at the forefront of this historical wave, we are going to challenge the big stage of the "30th Honolulu Festival" in Hawaii. We plan to host a booth where locals can experience calligraphy firsthand, and perform dynamic shows that will move the hearts of many.

This challenge is not just a memory-making trip for students. We are going to try this great stage to support the registration of Japanese Calligraphy (Shodo) for UNESCO.

Our goal is to transcend language barriers, connect with the local atmosphere, and prove to the world how exciting, passionate, and "cool" Japanese traditional culture is. With respect for our solid history and pride in our hearts, we want to make Japanese "Shodo" come alive under the Hawaiian sky.

From a small stage of just 10 people to the global stage. 
The trajectory of our "Calligraphy Performance" born in a corner of a classroom.

Let's turn the clock back to 2022. The invisible wall of COVID-19 covered the world, and students disappeared from university campuses. Training camps were canceled, exhibitions were shrunk. A sense of entrapment, hidden behind masks, covered the Meiji University Japanese Calligraphy Club.

"Why don't we try a calligraphy performance?''

It started with a casual talk by a member in the corner of a classroom. However, it wasn't smooth sailing. "Traditional calligraphy doing a performance?" perhaps due to such hesitation, we struggled even to gather members at first.

We finally made our first performance happen. Only about 10 members stood on stage. It was small, and we were fumbling in the dark. But the moment we ran our brushes across the paper in sync with the music using our whole bodies, we knew: "This is the heat we were looking for."

From there, our steady challenge began. We went to local events to wield our brushes, cooperated with TV filming, and gave our all at every single stage. Through these humble and honest efforts, our circle expanded little by little, but surely.

A few years later. The group that started with 10 people was now standing on the main stage of the Meiji University School Festival with many comrades. The view before us was a packed audience. The casual word from the corner of a classroom had turned into a scene shaking the hearts of countless people.

Last year, our activities finally crossed the sea to the "Honolulu Festival" for the first time. This achievement was recognized with the "Student Dean's Award" from the university. It was the moment we felt pushed forward, knowing our path wasn't wrong.

And this year. Building on last year's experience, we challenge the 30th Honolulu Festival with an even more evolved performance. From a small stage to the grand finale in Hawaii.

This is the culmination of our souls, of the Meiji University Calligraphy Club, and of us who built a new tradition from zero, overcoming the pandemic.
