私たち新発田（しばた）市バスケットボール協会は 、新潟県の新発田市を拠点に「バスケットボールを通じた街を元気に」を目指して活動している団体です。新発田市は「バスケが盛んな街」として知られ、プロから学生まで熱心に競技に取り組む土壌があります。私たちは、単なる技術向上だけでなく、スポーツが持つ「国境を越える力」を次世代に伝えるべく、本プロジェクトを推進しています。

About Us (Self-Introduction)

Shibata City Basketball Association

Based in Shibata City, Niigata Prefecture, our organization is dedicated to the mission: "Energizing our community through basketball." Shibata is widely recognized as a "Basketball Town," with a deep-rooted culture where everyone from youth players to professionals is passionately involved in the sport. Through this project, we aim to do more than just improve athletic skills; we are committed to teaching the next generation about the "power of sports to transcend borders" and build lasting international connections.

このプロジェクトで実現したいこと

「コロナ禍で断たれた約束を果たし、新発田の中学生をロサンゼルスへ届けたい！」 2026年、新発田市の中学生男女をロサンゼルスへ派遣します。現地では、日系四世のバスケットボール協会との交流試合、ホームステイ、そしてアメリカの文化、日系人の歴史を学ぶフィールドワークを行います。

• 歴史を学ぶ: 収容所などの歴史を背景に持つ日系コミュニティと触れ合い、アイデンティティや誇りを学びます。

• 文化を尊敬する: 5日間のホームステイを通じ、英語や文化の壁を越えた「人間関係」を築きます。

• 世界へ羽ばたく: この経験を糧に、将来新発田から世界を舞台に活躍するリーダーが出ることを期待します。

Project Goals

"Fulfilling a promise broken by the pandemic: Sending Shibata’s youth to Los Angeles!"

In 2026, we will send a delegation of junior high school boys and girls from Shibata City to Los Angeles. This program features exhibition games with the Japanese American basketball community, homestay experiences, and fieldwork to study American culture and the profound history of Japanese Americans.

• Learning History: By engaging with the Nikkei community—whose roots include the history of wartime internment—students will learn about resilience, identity, and cultural pride.

• Respecting Cultures: Through a 5-day homestay, students will build genuine "human connections" that transcend language and cultural barriers.

• Taking Flight to the World: We hope this experience will serve as a foundation for these students to become future leaders who can thrive on the global stage, representing Shibata.

プロジェクト立ち上げの背景

物語は2019年に始まりました。LAの日系四世の子どもたちが新発田を訪れ、最高の5日間を過ごしました。翌年、今度は私たちがLAへ行く番でした。しかし、パンデミックがすべてを奪いました。「いつか必ず会いに行く」という約束を抱えたまま、当時の子どもたちは卒業していきました。 しかし、私たちは諦めませんでした。2025年、再びLAの子どもたちとその家族が新発田に来日。2度目の交流は大成功を収め、絆が本物であることを再確認しました。 「次こそ、新発田の子どもたちが海を渡る番です」 円安や物価高騰という新たな壁がありますが、大人の都合で子どもたちの夢を諦めさせたくない。その一心でこのプロジェクトを立ち上げました。

Background of the Project

Our story began in 2019. Children from the Los Angeles Yonsei (4th generation Japanese American) community visited Shibata, spending five unforgettable days with us. The following year, it was our turn to visit LA. However, the pandemic changed everything. The students at that time graduated with an unfulfilled promise in their hearts: "One day, we will definitely go to meet you."

But we never gave up. In 2025, the children from LA and their families returned to Shibata once again. This second exchange was a resounding success, reaffirming that our bond is truly special and enduring.

"Now, it is finally time for the children of Shibata to cross the ocean."

We face new obstacles today, such as the weak yen and rising costs. However, we refuse to let adult circumstances force our children to give up on their dreams. This conviction is the driving force behind the launch of this project.

現在の準備状況

現在、2026年の渡米に向けて、ロサンゼルス日系バスケットボール協会と詳細なスケジュールの調整を進めています。

• 現地受入体制: LA側でのホームステイ先の確保、交流試合の会場予約を進行中。

• 地元調整: 新発田市内の協力企業や団体への説明を行い、地域一丸となったサポート体制を構築しています。

Current Status

We are currently in the process of finalizing the detailed itinerary for our 2026 trip with the Japanese Athletic Organization (JAO) in Los Angeles.

• Local Arrangements in LA: We are working closely with our partners in Los Angeles to secure homestay families and reserve venues for the exhibition games.

• Local Coordination in Shibata: We are currently briefing local businesses and organizations within Shibata City to build a community-wide support system, ensuring that the entire region is united in supporting this project.

最後に

バスケットボールが、新発田とロサンゼルスを繋ぎました。 2019年に交わした「約束」は、コロナ禍という長い冬を越え、今ようやく果たされようとしています。このプロジェクトは、単なる旅行ではありません。子どもたちがバスケットボールを通して「世界は繋がっている」「困難を越えて約束は果たせる」という希望を肌で感じるための挑戦です。 新発田の未来を担う子どもたちの背中を、どうか皆様の力で押してはいただけないでしょうか。温かいご支援を、心よりお願い申し上げます。

Final Message

Basketball has connected the cities of Shibata and Los Angeles. The "promise" we made back in 2019 has endured the long winter of the pandemic and is finally on the verge of being fulfilled.

This project is more than just a trip. Through basketball, it is a challenge to help our children feel—firsthand—the hope that "the world is connected" and that "promises can be kept, no matter the hardship."
