For English, please scroll to the end.

Yahoo!

「Benton Homestead」

「¡Tacos Party!」

Beginning of English translation:

We're building a Taco Kitchen and Retro Shop on the Shimanami Kaido!

Hello! We're Evan and Dani Benton. We planted our roots on the Shimanami Kaido to cultivate our new life in the Japanese countryside. The beautiful island of Ōmishima (Imabari city, Ehime) is where we chose to build our small business: Benton Homestead.

It's been nearly four years since we arrived, and we haven't stopped working towards our dream. First, we renovated a former 'akiya' abandoned house into Benton Guesthouse, our Shōwa retro private full-house rental. The house has welcomed over one-thousand guests from all over the world, and maintains very high guest review ratings. We've also built a small natural farm, which specializes in producing monofloral 'mikan' citrus honey as well as the essential vegetables for Mexican cuisine, which can be difficult to find in Japan.

Our next project is transforming the former warehouse on the guesthouse property! We envision two businesses under one roof: a Mexican-food restaurant and a retro shop. It will be a gathering place where you can enjoy delicious tacos made with local ingredients, and also interact with interesting vintage items from the Shōwa era.

The combination ¡Tacos Party! restaurant and Natsukashii Retro shop will be a unique attraction on Ōmishima. Where else can you get Mexican food, made by Americans, on a rural Japanese island, and also find an antique treasure to take home with you? We hope it will become a community hub for both locals and tourists, as well as a new dining option for our growing neighborhood.

The Former Warehouse

This warehouse has been sitting vacant for at least 15 years, and probably much longer. When we purchased the property in early 2023, the building was falling into complete disrepair: the metal roof had rusted through, the earthen walls had taken years of water damage, the slow decay of the 'tsuchikabe' walls had left a thick layer of grime on all the interior surfaces, and during rainy season, the floor of the garage would collect standing water. However, we always saw the potential of the high ceilings and open floorplan making it the perfect blank canvas.

The time has finally arrived to begin transforming this warehouse! We have very slowly begun making efforts to stop any further damage from occurring. So far, we have replaced the metal roof, added insulation and a beautiful wooden ceiling, replaced rotten beams and pillars, addressed the drainage issues which allowed water to collect on the floor, and began restoring the earthen walls with new sparkly 'juraku'. This has been a combination effort with local contractors and our own DIY.

But why Mexican food?

We are often asked why we chose Mexican food. We are from the United States, but before settling in Japan, we lived in Mexico. While traveling through 21 Mexican states, we observed how fundamentally simple the food was to prepare: locally grown corn and chiles form the basis of every delicious dish.

When considering farm-to-table dining, it's important to focus on ingredients that can be supplied locally. Our wild boar tacos use Ōmishima-sourced 'inoshishi'. Our chicken tacos use 'oyadori', which is a type of 'stewing hen' famous in Ehime. Our 'horchata' is a cinnamon-flavored beverage made with local rice. We are currently growing our own tomatillos and peppers for salsas.

You may not be aware that Japan is in the middle of a 'Taco Boom', recording two straight years of double-digit growth in the number of Mexican restaurants nationwide. The Mexican government has even weighed in, awarding eight Japan-based eateries the prestigious 'Sello M' for their contributions to Mexican cuisine. Beyond that, grocery stores are starting to stock tortillas and taco kits, and 'Taco Night' is joining the weekly rotation of home-cooked meals. We are proud to be the Shimanami Kaido's first purveyor of authentic Mexican street food.

Over the past year, we've been testing and refining a simple menu while participating in local pop-up markets. The response has exceeded our expectations! Every time we pop-up, we sell out of tacos completely. At events such as Sando Market (on Children's Day) and Miyaura Market (over the New Year holiday), our customers are mostly local and traveling Japanese folks. But we also had some foreign customers travel over two hours specifically to enjoy our tacos! Our horchata has also been very popular.

As we expand our menu, we plan to add seafood options. Ōmishima is a popular sport fishing destination, and the calm, blue waters supply us with sea bream and flounder for Baja-style fish tacos, as well as shrimp, octopus, and oysters for ceviche.

We will also be offering salsas and hot sauces to take home! Mexico, after all, is a 'salsa bunka' (sauce culture). Alongside the typical red and green salsas we might experiment with a smoky Japanese BBQ 'tare' or hot sauce made from indigenous 'takanotsume' chiles and aged rice vinegar. Maybe some day we could even make our own tortilla chips...

The Seto inland sea, with its relatively dry summers, may be the part of Japan which most resembles the climate of Mexico. That explains why Ehime prefecture is emerging as the premier producer of avocados in Japan. In the future, we will work with local farmers to source all of our vegetables and corn; we will supply farmers with our own seedlings, then buy their vegetables. It will be a way to encourage more local farmers by providing a guaranteed sales outlet for their produce.

Of course, Japan is also home to many flavor-enhancing ingredients such as miso, shiokoji, soy sauce, and mirin. We look forward to discovering new classic combinations. How about miso-braised birria ramen? Dashi-infused sansho micheladas? Guisados de tofu? Citrus or sakura wood-smoked chipotles? The possibilities are endless.

Other benefits of a commercial kitchen

Evan has designed his kitchen space to be multi-purpose. That means, in addition to making tacos and hot sauce, there are many other options! Even if we outgrow this kitchen in the future, there will always be ways to utilize this investment. Some ideas we are considering:

* It will be a central kitchen for our taco cart pop-up, which will be located at Ōmishima's 'Michinoeki' Farmer's Market, at the very popular Cyclist Sanctuary by Tatara Bridge;

* We can offer breakfast service for Benton Guesthouse guests, as there are few early-morning options on the island;

* We can host monthly community events encompassing both the shop space, Benton Guesthouse, and the surrounding garden area: food, music, and entertainment;

* It can also be an “incubator kitchen” for other local start-ups, who may want to test out their idea, or use the kitchen on days it's available.

Why vintage items and retro goods?

Dani's vision for the Natsukashii Retro shop is difficult to explain with words, because she dreams of creating a space the likes of which she has never seen before. It will not just be a shop, but an experience. We love old things, partly because they are made better and so they tend to last longer than new things, and partly just because they're cool. The retro style of the Shōwa-era has come full circle, and now there's a demand for many of the items that had previously just been collecting dust in abandoned houses.

But we did not have the idea to sell retro goods before we arrived in Japan: we purchased two houses that were both treasure troves of nostalgic items. The house we now live in had every room full of neatly stacked boxes, each full of neatly packed antiques. Most people would not purchase a house so full of stuff, which is one reason why it had been listed for sale for such a long time. But we specifically wanted a house with useful and wonderful belongings, waiting for a chance to be given a second life.

Trust us when we say that furnishing Benton Guesthouse would've been much easier and less time-consuming if we had chosen to purchase all new furnishings and decorations. But that's not our style! We took the more difficult path of cleaning and restoring many items original to the home. The 'kotatsu' heating table, the 'tansu' dresser, the retro light fixtures, the wall hangings details, even little like the pink flowery ceramic cooking pot in the pink kitchen, are all from the house itself! Perhaps the most precious item is the beautiful hand-painted scroll from the 88 Temples of Shikoku, which the former owners completed by walking all over Japan's fourth-largest island. By saving these items, we've given future generations the opportunity to hear our house's story.

So take that concept, and turn it into an entire shop. Not only will visitors get a chance to hear the warm sounds of a record player, but they will be able to take a vinyl record from its sleeve, place it on the turntable, and drop the needle themselves. There will also be a laserdisc player for watching movies on a projection screen, a Nintendo Famicom console for playing games on a retro CRT television, and a rare vintage Japanese typewriter with 3,000 kanji characters for typing your own keepsake. be cute postcards for visitors to hand-write and stamp, to mail to friends back home. We believe it's little details like this that will elevate Natsukashii Retro  from shop to experience.

To start, there will be antique wood and glass display cases with lovely items found in our houses: thousands of dishes, rustic farm tools, baskets, funky ceramic chopstick rests, boxes of colorful retro glassware, office and desk supplies, 'omiyage' from all over Japan, and even clothing. But the experience will constantly evolve as old items find new homes, and new ones are discovered.

This is the perfect time and place to expand our business

The Shimanami Kaido is made up of seven suspension bridges spanning the Seto Sea between Hiroshima and Ehime prefectures. As the small island community grows to meet the needs of increasing cycling tourism, we want to help Ōmishima become a thriving and well-rounded destination.

Did you know that the Shimanami Kaido has become recognized world-wide? In 2025, nearly 200,000 bicycles were rented to visiting cyclists, both domestic and international. Considering that the bridge network has only been connected for about two decades, and the number of cyclists has increased over tenfold in the past few years, the islands still have plenty of room to grow in response to the increasing.

Ōmishima is one of the central islands, which offers beautiful Seto Sea views and a rich cultural history. Our neighborhood already has a few top-quality restaurants, operated by our friends and neighbors. But on holidays and weekday evenings, there are simply not enough dining options. By bringing Mexican food to Ōmishima, we will be helping to meet the needs of hungry travelers, and offering a cuisine which is not yet available locally.

Renovation expenses itemized

While this campaign has a starting goal set at ¥1,000,000, the actual cost of transforming this former abandoned warehouse is much more than that. The following amounts are invoices from local contractors:

* Roof Replacement ¥682,000

*Cement Floor Improvement ¥470,000

* Electrical Installation + Aircon ¥687,000

* Sewer Connection (for kitchen water) ¥775,000

* Various Commercial Kitchen Equipment ¥875,000 (approximate)

Total ¥3,489,000.

Please remember that Evan is keeping additional costs as low as possible, by doing as much of the renovation work himself! He's learning many new DIY skills from this project alone, and also repurposing many materials by using vintage doors, retro glass, and other items found in our properties. However, this amount could increase up to about ¥1 million.

Total spent on DIY materials so far: about ¥475,000.

Total Project Estimate: ¥4 million to ¥4.5 million.

Supporter Gifts

It's been a lot of fun dreaming up a variety of rewards for those who support our project, including gifts such as: a Private Taco Party event, learn to make salsa, stay at Benton Guesthouse, video chats with the Bentons, and portrait photography sessions with Dani. We also plan to display the names of our supporters in the shop, so you will always be remembered!

Schedule

During and after the crowdfunding campaign, we will continue to work on renovation of the former garage. We will proceed in stages with interior restoration, electrical wiring, plumbing, kitchen equipment installation, and preparation of the antique items and display pieces. Our goal is to have a soft opening this winter, with a grand opening next spring. Of course we will continue to share regular updates on our Benton Homestead  YouTube channel, Instagram, Facebook, and our photo blog.

A little more about the Bentons

We both grew up in a small town called Dallas, Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Evan was a massage therapist, and Dani was a commercial photographer. In 2016, we moved together to New Orleans, Louisiana. In 2021, we drove across the southern border to live in Mexico, where we traveled extensively as pet-sitters. Then in 2023, we settled on the Shimanami Kaido.

Since the day we arrived on Ōmishima, we have worked towards building our dream. We were the first foreign business owners to complete the Startup Visa program in Imabari city! It can be difficult to find information online about all the things we've been doing, so we decided to become an open-book resource. Through our YouTube channel and blog posts, we share detailed information covering many topics, including DIY renovation, immigration, operating a corporation in Japan, and life in the 'inaka'.

As we continue to settle into life in Japan, we volunteer weekly at the island dog rescue, and monthly at the Ōmishima public library. We feel very blessed to have been welcomed so warmly by the community.

Our business has also gotten the attention of some major media outlets. Over the past few years, we have been featured on TV-Asahi, NHK World Japan, and American CNBC. Our story has been shared in articles published on Ehime Shimbun newspaper, Yahoo! Japan, Business Insider, Escape Artist magazine, The Guardian, The Japan Times, as well as podcast interviews on numerous platforms. It's all been very surprising and exciting.

We've grown our business step by step

For nearly four years, our focus has been on creating value in the community through the restoration of vacant houses and land. Our guesthouse renovation was an opportunity to save a house which had been abandoned for ten years, along with all of the belongings remaining inside. Our bee yards and fields are on plots of land that were also abandoned for many years. Although those may seem like independent projects, they are actually connected by the theme of revitalization.

Our Shōwa retro private full-house rental is called Benton Guesthouse. It was built in 1953 using traditional Japanese construction methods, then sat empty for 10 years. We've lovingly restored it to intentionally create a nostalgic atmosphere, with modern amenities. Guests often say the house is like staying in a "living museum" as if they have stepped back in time. Many of the retro items, including a Nintendo Famicom, a record player, and a vintage 'kotatsu', are regularly enjoyed.

Since we opened our doors in December 2023, we've hosted over 350 guest groups, with over one-thousand guests! We maintain very high review ratings, including 5-stars on Google Maps. We are ranked as AirBnB 'Superhosts' and we recently earned the gold-level 'Guest Favorite' and prestigious 'Top 1%' of all listings in our area! On Booking.com, we recently joined the 'Preferred Partner Program' which is by invitation only.

About 85% of our guests are cycling throughout all four seasons. As a licensed 'ryokan', we can host 365 days a year. Before each guest arrives, we have already spent a lot of time communicating, helping with travel logistics, introducing local restaurants and activities, and even making dinner reservations on their behalf. In a way, we are more than just guesthouse hosts, we're cultural guides to the Shimanami Kaido .

Our company name is Benton Homestead, so of course natural farming is a core part of what we do. Currently, we have a small regenerative beekeeping operation, and we are growing peppers, tomatoes, and tomatillos, using all-natural methods. This year we planted our first mixed orchard of avocados and lime trees, so we really do have a 'salsa farm'!

In addition to creating a direct outlet for our own farm produce, opening a taco shop will allow us to justify hiring additional help on the farming side. One of the biggest problems businesses throughout rural Japan face is attracting workers. We know there isn't a large labor pool on the islands, and we think we'll have a better chance of coaxing people to move out from the major cities if we combine the prospect of learning sustainable farming techniques with how to make Mexican food. On top of that, our employees will have the chance to boost their income by growing salsa ingredients on their own fields!

Final Notes

On a small island like Ōmishima, in the middle of the Shimanami Kaido, we are building our dream one step at a time. We believe that by carefully building upon each individual initiative, our small business will enhance and support the growing island community, to meet the needs of the increasing cycling tourism.

Our business Benton Homestead is made up of many small complimentary pursuits that fit together to create a cohesive vision. The meaning of the word “homestead” implies a self-sustainable lifestyle where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. ¡Tacos Party! restaurant and Natsukashii Retro shop are a natural addition to what we've already built.

This project is not simply about creating a single store. We believe that by transforming this abandoned warehouse into a thriving community space, we can demonstrate a model for regional revitalization. Ōmishima is already attracting young Japanese people to relocate and start island-based businesses, even natural farming, so our efforts are already reflecting the current trend.

Your support will be the driving force behind the creation of this new space for ¡Tacos Party! restaurant and Natsukashii Retro shop. We would be delighted if you would join us by investing in this project. When it's completed, or even during renovation, please come to visit us on Ōmishima. We look forward to meeting you!

Thank you,
Evan & Dani Benton
