はじめに・ご挨拶・Introduction
オー・ヘンリーの「賢者の贈り物」は1905年に初めて出版され、その後すぐに日本語に翻訳されて学校教育に取り入れられました。この心温まるお話は、本当の幸せとは何かを真のクリスマス精神とともに私たちに示しており、今日でも日本中の学校で教材として使われています。
名古屋プレイヤーズが現在制作中の劇「賢者の贈り物」（ジョン・ジョリー翻案）の協力事業の一環として、私たちは学習支援を目的とする英語教材とワークショップを計画しています。
この教材を使ってより楽しく英語を学び、ストーリーの理解を深めてもらえればうれしく思います。
The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry was first published in 1905. Shortly after, it was then translated into Japanese and introduced into the public school system. It is a heartwarming tale that illustrates wholesome values and the true spirit of Christmas. It is still being taught in many classrooms across Japan to this day.
In conjunction with Nagoya Players’ upcoming production of The Gift of the Magi adapted by Jon Jory, we’re launching a series of English education materials and workshops to aid learners. We hope these materials will help learners improve their English abilities and gain a better understanding of the show.
このプロジェクトで実現したいこと・Goals
名古屋プレイヤーズは、最新作オー・ヘンリーの「賢者の贈り物」の公演を2019年12月7~8日東小文化劇場にて行います。この作品はアップテンポで楽しいロマンティックコメディーですが、クリスマスの本当の意味を私たちに真摯に問いかけます。この作品は英語劇に加え音楽、歌、踊りなど楽しい要素が一杯で、レベルを問わずどなたでも楽しく英語を学べるように制作しました。
この作品をよりよく理解していただくために、私たちは子供向け及び初心者向けの多言語絵本を製作しました。この本はレベルに合った語彙と文法で書かれており、また画家ウェイン・ウィルソン氏の素晴らしいイラストが物語を一層引き立てます。分かり易い英語、イラスト、物語、テーマが一体になったこの絵本がきっかけとなり、皆さんがもっと楽しく英語を学び、また英語を通じて芸術に親しんでいただければ幸いです。
This Dec. 7-8th, 2019 Nagoya Players will be performing a brand new production of O. Henry’s, The Gift of the Magi at Higashi Playhouse in Nagoya City. It is a fast, fun romantic-comedy that expresses with sincerity the true meaning of the Christmas holiday. There will be acting, music, song, dance and more. It has been specially crafted with English education in mind and is a great show for all levels to enjoy.
To prepare English learners for the show we’ve developed multilingual picture books that retell the story for Kids and English-Beginners. The book has been carefully designed with level appropriate vocabulary and grammar. It also features wonderfully drawn illustrations by artist Wayne Wilson. We hope this combination of accessible language, visuals, storytelling and theme will motivate learners to further pursue their studies and explore the arts through English.
プロジェクトをやろうと思った理由・Motivations
日本の英語教育は長い間、生きた英語を自発的に学ぶことを奨励するものではありませんでした。この傾向はとくに中高生に顕著です。多くの公立学校、塾、英会話学校で行なわれているのは、丸暗記と文法中心の教育です。残念な事にこの方法ではあまり効果がないことが証明されています。このような教育を受けた生徒たちの多くは、たとえ数年間学んでも生きた英語が身に付きません。
言語を習得するための重要なカギは、様々な情報を関連付けて理解する力です。何かを学ぶには理由と動機付けが必要です。「楽しい、もっと知りたい」という”やる気スイッチ”が入れば、言葉はどんどん自分のものになっていきます。興味があれば、楽しみながら進んで学習するようになるでしょう。
名古屋プレイヤーズは40年以上にわたって英語劇の公演を行ってきましたが、それは同時に別の角度から英語を学ぶ方法の提案でもあります。劇場は外国語を学ぶ方々にとって理想的な環境なのですが、英語劇を本当に理解するためには他の学習も必要です。この観点から私達は英語教育推進プログラム（EEI）を展開し学習補助教材を自費出版ことにしました。この教材が皆さんのやる気を引き出し、英語劇を楽しむのに役立つ事を願っています。
For many years English education in Japan hasn’t been very engaging or motivating, especially amongst young learners. The approach in many public schools, juku and eikaiwa has been one of rote memorization and grammar centric instruction. Sadly, this has proven to be fairly ineffectual. Many students who go through several years of this type of learning don’t achieve adequate proficiency or familiarity with the language.
A large component of language acquisition is contextualization. There should be a reason and motivation to learn. Inspired students absorb language faster. When there is something enjoyable or interesting associated with the language, studying becomes less laborious and more meaningful.
For over four decades Nagoya Players has been producing English-language theater shows as an alternative and supplemental form of language acquisition. Live theater is a fantastic environment for language learners. However, to truly understand an English play it is often necessary to do additional study. And so, our English Education Initiative (EEI) has been developed to provide learners with materials that will aid and motivate them to acquire more language and enjoy live performances.
これまでの活動・History
名古屋プレイヤーズは名古屋の英語演劇界の中心的存在として、40年以上にわたり約80回の公演を行ってきました。その演目はシェイクスピアに始まり、チャールズ・ディケンズ、現代演劇、日本の昔話、その他名古屋在住外国人によるオリジナル作品まで様々です。
私たちの願いは、名古屋プレイヤーズの劇を見て友人との会話が弾みもっと外国語を学びたくなる人が増える事です。英語は難しいという思い込みは捨ててください。英語のショーや演劇は面白いんだと日本の皆さんに気づいてほしいのです。演劇は楽しくてワクワクするものです。外国語で演劇を見て異なる文化を楽しく学びましょう。
Nagoya Players has been a mainstay of Nagoya’s international theater community for over forty years with over eighty shows produced. We have put on stage a wide variety of shows from Shakespeare, to Dickens, to the Vagina Monologues, Japanese folklore, and even several original scripts written by expatriates in Nagoya.
We hope our shows will create conversation and motivate audiences to study other languages. We want to remove barriers and change people’s minds about English entertainment in Japan. Theater is exciting and fun! And, experiencing it a foreign language is a great way to learn another culture.
資金の使い道 • Funding
私たちはこの絵本200冊を様々な慈善活動、孤児院、病院、幼稚園、保育園、小学校、図書館などに寄付したいと考えています。
クラウドファンディングでご支援いただいた資金をもとに、私たちはISBN番号を購入し本を印刷にかけます。ISBN番号があれば、世界中の図書館や学校に本を送ることもできます。最初に出版する絵本は日英ですが、順次ポルトガル語、タガログ語、中国語、韓国語、スペイン語、中国語、韓国語、スペイン語、イタリア語、仏語、独語、ロシア語版も予定しています。それぞれの言語の絵本には異なるISBN番号が必要になります。印刷バージョンの絵本は高品質の紙を使用しソフトカバーの体裁になります。出来上がった絵本はCAMPFIRE・クラウドファンディング・キャンペーンの支援者の方々に送られます。キャンペーン終了後の再販は未定ですが、需要があれば再販いたします。それ以外の本は名古屋プレイヤーズのイベントで販売しますが、収益は今後の公演や教材作成の資金に充てられます。
このプロジェクトを成功させるために、是非とも皆様のご協力をお願い致します。目標額が達成されると絵本印刷のための必要最低額をまかなうことができます。
Our goal is to produce an initial print run of 200 books. We’d like to distribute these books for free to various charities, orphanages, hospitals, kindergartens, nursery schools, elementary schools, and libraries.
With money raised via crowdfunding we can purchase ISBN numbers. With the ISBN numbers we can then distribute books to libraries and schools around the world. The first version of the book is English-Japanese, but we’d also like to add Portuguese, Tagalog, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Italian, French, German, and Russian languages as well. Each language-version of the book would require a unique ISBN number.
The printed edition of the book will be printed on high-quality paper and feature a glossy soft cover. The printed edition will be limited to backers of the Camp-fire campaign. There is no guarantee of future printings after this campaign ends. Any future printing will be based on demand.
Remaining picture books will be available for purchase at Nagoya Players events where the proceeds will go towards funding future shows and educational materials.

アニメーションはウェイン・ウィルソン氏が制作し、音楽は名古屋プレイヤーズ音楽監督ロバート・ベイティ氏が担当します。音声は英語で約5分間の作品になります。もしもアニメバージョンの絵本が完成すれば、私たちが推進する英語教育を日本のみならず世界中に広めることができます。またアニメならアニメ好きはもちろんの事、ハイテクに馴染んだ若い世代も関心を持ってくれる事でしょう。
アニメ制作に合わせて、高音質のオーディオブックを作ることも可能になります。その際、英語のオーディオブックは名古屋プレイヤーズのHPからダウンロードすることができます。
ウェインはすでに、アニメ本編に先だっていくつかのスケッチを書いてくれました。上のビデオでご覧ください。
Wayne Wilson is an established illustrator and author but he’s also a very talented animator. If we can surpass our initial goal of ¥256,000, we will then work towards a secondary stretch goal of ¥117,000 to pay for the production costs of an animated version of the picture book.
The animation will be done by Wayne with music by Nagoya Players Music Director Robert Beatty. It’ll be voiced in English and have a runtime of approximately 5 minutes. An animated version of the materials will further help us spread and promote English education throughout Japan and the world. It will also make it easier to attract the younger, more technologically inclined generation. As well as animation fans!
Along with the animation we will also be able to produce high quality audio recordings of the picture book. An English audio-book version will then become available for download via our website.

実施スケジュール • Schedule
本の発送と流通は2019年10月から12月にかけて行われます。私たちはできるだけ多くの学校、団体、図書館などに働きかけ、英語を学んだり教えたりすることに関心のある子供たちや保護者の皆さんの手にこの絵本を手渡したいと考えています。
If the project is successfully funded, books will be sent to print and distributed starting October 2019. We hope to reach as many schools, organizations and libraries as possible and put the books in the hands of parents and children who are interested in learning and teaching English.
最後に • Call to Action
日本で劇を制作するにはとても費用が掛かります。私たちの予算は全て劇場公演に使われてしまう為、この様な教育プロジェクトの費用を捻出するのは至難の業です。しかしながら、教育支援と地域貢献は私たちにとって一番大切な活動方針です。これらの補助教材とプロジェクトを通して演劇を愛する人々や外国語を学ぶ方たちに、より豊かで心に残る経験をしていただきたいと私たちは心から願っています。

Theater production in Japan is very costly. The entirety of our budget goes towards putting on our stage performances. It makes it very challenging to find funds for educational projects such as this. Nonetheless, our commitment to Education and Community Service remains a priority. We hope these supplemental materials and projects can create a more meaningful and impactful experience for theater goers and language learners.
