There were positive developments in 2021, however, possibly signalling stronger prospects. Electric car sales in emerging markets spiked to unprecedented levels in 2021: more than doubling in Asia to 33000 in Eastern Europe, Central and West Asia to 32000 and in Latin America and the Caribbean to 18000. In Eastern Europe, Central and West Asia, this growth was led by BEVs, which accounted for about 65% of new electric car sales. In Latin America and the Caribbean, sales were more evenly split with PHEVs. Although electric car sales remained low across Africa, they increased by 90%, of which BEVs accounted for 85%. While India is expecting a range of electric models from local manufacturer Tata, the most affordable electric car at the moment is the MG ZS EV. The affordable city car has seen strong sales in 2016, since Nissan launched a new version late last year. However, Nissan’s micro-Micra sitting as the second most popular car in the segment, Nissan announced in April it’ll be axing the car in Australia.
