Xiaotai CAO

曹暁泰（ソウ ギョウタイ）

Xiaotai Cao was born in Qinghai Province, China in 1993.

In his works, he mostly uses materials from nature - woods, plants, flowers, etc. - and creates new forms of outputs through understanding and interpretation of natural elements such as mountains and water. He also emphasizes the coordination and mutual influence between human and nature.

He currently lives in Japan and studies in the Global Art Practice Masters program at Tokyo University of the Arts.

曹暁泰(Xiaotai Cao)は1993年、中国青海省生まれ。

木、植物、花など自然の素材を多く使い、山、水、自然の要素を理解し、解釈することにより、新たな形とアウトプットを生み出している。彼はまた、人間と自然の協同と相互作用を強調している。

現在、日本在住。東京芸術大学院グローバルアートプラクティス科在学中。

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I walked along the deserted coast of Oarai in Eastern Japan.

The Pacific Ocean has brought wood and trash here in abundance, and they lie on the shore in harmony, just as they have grown here since the beginning.

The wind swept, and the bodies and bones of animals and plants return to dust, or turn into oil and fossils. While the plastic that humans extract from oil remains long time on the earth. They wrap, they cover or they get swallowed, They are totally different and yet identical from things in nature.

Like someone with a mask: specious, the same and yet not the same.

コロナ中、誰もいない東日本の大洗海岸を歩いた。太平洋が多くの木やゴミを運んできて、海岸に一緒に生きているようだ。

海風に吹かれ、動植物の遺体は塵に還り、石油や化石と化す。我々が石油から取り出したプラスチックは、地球の表面に長く残っている。巻きついたり、覆い被さったり、飲み込まれたり、それらは自然の中のものとは異なるが、同じものでもある。

仮面をかぶった自分のように、似て非なる。一つであるはずなのに、一つではない。

I've always been interested in nature around the environment I live in. During my stay in Toride, I collected the wild flowers and plants every day and combined them with objects in my daily life to create works. This series of works  – “The flower becomes me” –  will also be exhibited in the upcoming Geidai Graduation Exhibition 2022.

For the residential project in Karuizawa, I want to continue this work. I hope that the nature of Karuizawa, as well as the surrounding plants, will bring me different inspirations and ideas.

At the same time, I am considering the combination of 3D modeling and virtual plant works, hoping to have a good start during this residential project.

私は住んでいるところの自然にいつも興味を持っています。取手に住んでいる時、毎日野花や植物を集め、日常の物と組み合わせて作品を作っていました。この一連の作品「花は私になる」は、今回の芸大卒業展2022にも展示されます。

軽井沢でこの作品も続けていきたいと思います。軽井沢の自然とその周辺の植物が、私にさまざまなインスピレーションやアイデアをもたらしてくれることを楽しみにしています。

また、3Dモデリングとバーチャル植物の作品も作りたいので、今度のレジデンスプロジェクトの間に良いスタートを切ることを望んでいます。
