私、江成オチェロカレンは、日本人とウガンダ人の両親を持つハーフの18歳です。今春、早稲田大学国際教養学部に進学しましたが、長年の海外大学進学の夢を追い続け、このように、クラウドファンディングを通して学費の支援を募っています。

<中学一年生の私の自己紹介文 / My junior high school essay about myself>

私の名前はカレンです。12歳です。

母が日本人で父がウガンダ人なので、私の出身地は日本とウガンダ、というべきでしょう。

これが私の他の人と違うところです。

私の肌は明るい茶色で、髪の毛はくるくるです。

小学校一年生の時、私以外はみんな似ていました。

みんなが私を見ていました。その目はちょっと怖かった。

でも、私に興味を持ってくれていたので自己紹介をしたら仲良くなれました。

私は他の人と見た目が違うことで、より多くのことができると思います。

この機会を使って、中学校ではたくさんの挑戦をしたいです。

幼いころから東京の国際ビジネスコミュニティや様々な人種や国籍の方々と関わる中、異なる文化間を橋渡しする経験を得ました。高校は、帰国生や多様な文化的背景を持つ生徒が通うカナダの海外校が併設された日本の学校に進学しました。そこで、成績を維持しながら社会課題探求プロジェクトを積極的に立ち上げ、３年間の特待生を経て首席で卒業しました。私は日本生まれ日本育ちですが、両親の熱心な教育と自身の努力により、英語も堪能になりました。

私はこれまで文化の多様性に触れそれに魅了され、異文化コミュニケーションに深い関心を持っています。私の最終目標は、今までの経験と海外留学での成長を経て、自分にしかできない貢献方法で日本の真の国際化に役立つことです。

All About Me!

I am Karen Enari-Ochero, a biracial student of Japanese and Ugandan parents. I grew up in Tokyo’s international community in a multicultural setting. I attended public elementary school and continued to a Canadian International Junior High School with many other biracial kids including returnees and international students. This benefitted my cross-cultural skills and I went on to graduate top of my High School grade with numerous social and academic awards. Raised solely in Japan, I am fluent in English and I hope to live and study in a foreign country. I am fascinated with cultural dynamics, and with Japan’s fast-growing internationalization, I want to play a role in Japan’s globalization. My unique background, if nurtured would allow me to see the world from a more comprehensive perspective.

このプロジェクトで実現したいこと

このプロジェクトの一番の目的は、大学の学費を支援していただくことです。受給予定のJASSOの海外大学奨学金は部分的な奨学金であり、残りの学費を賄うためにクラウドファンディングを通して皆様のお力を求めています。

同時に、今の日本の若者にとって留学や奨学金受給がより簡単で主流な道になるよう、出身高校で自らの経験を共有します。高校三年生の1年間、国内外の様々な大学や奨学金に出願し、様々な知識と経験を積み重ねてきました。その中でも自分に合った奨学金をリサーチして選択し、書類を作成して出願するその過程は非常に複雑でした。優秀な学生であっても、留学できる確率が低い現実を目の当たりにし、同様の状況に置かれている高校生が奨学金や授業料の資金を現在よりももっとうまく活用できるように、自分の経験を活かして支援したいと考えています。これは同時に、ご支援していただく皆様への恩返しと、私を支援してくれた社会に対する感謝の気持ちを示す方法です。

そして、このプロジェクトを通して日本のビジネスコミュニティにいる皆様とのつながりを深め、将来日本の発展に貢献できるような道を切り開けるよう、経験を積んで努力していきます。

What I want to achieve with this project

Through this project, I hope to raise funds to pay for University, foreign or local. I am presently enrolled at Waseda University, but I also have ‘partial’ scholarships from Toronto (Canada) and Bristol (UK). While my target is to fund tuition for Waseda, top-up for Bristol is more affordable. On another note, I want to give back to the community. During the past year, I have accumulated vast knowledge about the university enrollment process. And the reality that even the best students have a low chance to study abroad. I aim to volunteer at future High School graduations and share my story to help other students achieve their dreams. This would be a fitting way to repay you for supporting my project. And finally, hopefully, the project will be a strong starting point to building my career connections in Japan’s future.

プロジェクト立ち上げの背景

日本人と外国人のハーフとして、幼いころから異なる文化間の人々のつながりに興味を持っていた私は、実体験を通して真に異文化を理解するためにも、必ず海外大学に進学する！と、中学校時代から心に誓っていました。

しかしその道は想像以上に厳しく、何度も途絶えそうになりました。

2019年、父が会社の仕事を失って以来、私立の中学校から付属の高校に進学するために必死に勉強し、課外活動も積極的に行いました。その結果、高校入学時から卒業まで特待生として毎年全額奨学金を授与され、念願のダブルディグリープログラムで学業を続けることができました。そして今年、トロント大学のロットマン商学部から入学奨学金付きの合格を頂きましたが、入学奨学金のみでは4年間の授業料を負担できないため、夢の道を断念せざるを得ませんでした。

しかし、幸運なことに、今年の4月にイギリスのブリストル大学から合格をいただくと同時に、JASSOから年間400万円の海外大給付型奨学金の受給者に選抜されました。このチャンスを最大限活用し、3年間の留学を実現するためには、奨学金に上乗せする資金をどうしても集めなければいけません。私が財政的なストレスなく学生生活を送るためには、3年間で約700万円が必要です。

一方で、現在は早稲田大学国際教養学部に在学しており、海外大を断念したとしても、そこでの学習を続けるためには、700万円（4年間の授業料）と300万円（1年間の留学費用）が必要です。

Background of project launch

As a young child growing up in an international community, I was fascinated with how people from different cultures interact with one another, and since middle school, I always believed that attending university abroad is essential to gain experience and fully understand the multicultural world we live in.   

However, this pathway almost went down several times! 

In 2019 my father lost his company job, but because I won full scholarships every year, I was able to continue with my studies. Due to my impressive record of academic achievements, it was expected that I would get admittance to a top University on a full scholarship. The recruitment agencies proved expensive so the groundwork was done by my family with help from the school. However, we would later find that the scholarship system is very complicated, and an experienced agent is essential. Most scholarships are ‘partial’ and like the 'University of Toronto', are not sufficient without further funding.

In April, I received an offer to the University of Bristol in the UK, and within days, selected as a recipient of the JASSO overseas scholarship, which will provide JPY4M/year making Bristol more affordable than Waseda. This is a great opportunity, and I must now raise additional funds to enroll in the 3-year undergraduate program at the University of Bristol.

I am presently enrolled in Waseda University's 4 year SILS program. It will cost JPY7M (tuition) plus JPY3M (one-year study-abroad). 

これまでの活動と準備状況

私は中学高校時代、学業に励むだけでなく、学内外の課外活動や地域コミュニティのボランティアに積極的に参加してきました。

環境問題の課題意識拡大や、男女平等への意識改革を進める運動、そして、昨年私が主催したアフリカ文化交流ワークショップなど。その活動内容は幅広く、多文化理解の促進や教育機会の拡大を図るイベントの企画や運営などもしました。そして高校を卒業した今もなお、出身高校(中高一貫校)で行われる中学生対象の視覚障害の世界を知るワークショップを手伝っています。

留学先での学習や課外活動を充実したものにするために、そこで必要な思考力、クリエイティビティ、判断力や協力する力を、早稲田大学と課外活動を通して培っています。現在はイギリス大学への進学の夢をどうしても叶えたいと、このクラウドファンディングを通じて皆様に応援していただけるよう、このページを立ち上げました。

Past activities and preparation status

During Middle and High school, I actively participated in extracurricular activities in and out of school, volunteering in the local community with programs to increase awareness of environmental issues, gender equality and cultural exchanges. Activities involved planning, managing and promoting multicultural understanding with educational workshops. Today, my participation continues with workshops for the visually impaired, held at my alma mater high school.

Studying abroad will widen opportunities for new challenges to build on and cultivate thought, creativity, judgment and cooperation skills. In September, I have the opportunity to join a British university on a good scholarship and I have launched this crowdfunding campaign to drum up support for top-up funds.

高校三年生の春、世界気象機関へ出向き、現在の課題と今後の展望に関する取材をさせていただきました。

In 2023 spring, I had a chance to interview WMO about current issues and future progress.

　今年の６月、UNDPの副総裁をお招きした会合の運営に参加しました。

　In June 2024, I supported the team in organizing a conference that connected UNDP and the Japanese parliament.

高校一年生の冬、SB国際会議でESGに関して登壇させていただきました。

In February 2022, I was honoured to present my ideas on ESG at the Sustainable Brand International Conference in Yokohama as a high school guest speaker.

Please support a talented student with ideas to make the world a better place, one small step at a time. For my part, I will continue to push for and participate in extracurricular programs. But most of all, I will endeavour to encourage today’s youth to walk along this path. If successful, this crowdfunding project will be a great story to tell in my future social projects.
