Introduction

Hello, my name is Manari Osaki.

In February 2024, at the age of 33, I was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer.

This October, I will be competing in the Mrs. Universe World Finals in Sri Lanka, where I also hope to raise awareness of breast cancer. To help cover some of the expenses associated with this journey, I have decided to launch this crowdfunding campaign.

The message I want to share through this challenge is simple: Even when living with an illness, we can still live authentically and stay true to who we are.

When I was first diagnosed, I cried countless times. I felt deeply alone, unable to find a community of other women going through the same experience.

But little by little, something began to grow within me.
“Am I really going to let myself die without getting anything out of this?”

That rebellious spirit gave me the strength to keep moving forward, time and time again, whenever I felt like giving up.

In Japan, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. Despite this, I realized that I myself had had very few opportunities to talk openly about breast cancer or learn the facts about it.

If we had a culture where we could talk about cancer more openly, perhaps more women would recognize changes in their bodies and seek medical attention at an earlier stage. Early detection can expand treatment options and may help more women protect their careers and their futures.

That is when I began to feel that I wanted to share my own experience and start raising awareness of breast cancer.

However, going public with my diagnosis required an enormous amount of courage. For a long time, I hesitated, unable to take that final step.

Then I discovered Mrs. Universe.
I felt that taking on this challenge could give me the push I needed to move forward.

That was where it all began.

Why Mrs Universe?

There are many ways to raise awareness of breast cancer, from giving talks to participating in charity marathons.

Yet I chose Mrs. Universe because I wanted to show that even when treatment changes our appearance, we can still shine and live authentically as women.

As a result of my breast cancer diagnosis, I underwent treatment to suppress my female hormones, and I lost my hair.

At a young age, the thought of losing these things filled me with fear. I worried that I might lose my femininity, too. That fear was almost as overwhelming as the disease itself.

But even after losing my hair, I did not lose my confidence as a woman.

Through my treatment, I came to realize that our confidence and worth as women are not defined by our appearance.

What matters is not how others see us, but how we choose to live.

Having experienced firsthand that life is finite, I no longer want to give up on my potential because of changes in my appearance.

Mrs. Universe, a stage that brings together women from all over the world, is an important platform for me to share my personal experience and raise awareness of breast cancer.

By standing on this stage with my shaved head, I hope to help more people learn about breast cancer. I also want to send a message to women who are struggling with the side effects of treatment or changes in their appearance: Even when your appearance changes, you can still shine and be true to yourself.

That is why I am taking on the challenge of Mrs. Universe.

Taking on the World Stage

I placed third in the Mrs. Universe Japan competition, earning the opportunity to represent Japan at the Mrs. Universe World Finals in Sri Lanka this October.

For me, this competition holds great significance. I have always hoped to share my experiences and message not only in Japan, but with people around the world.

In Sri Lanka, I have also been given the opportunity to raise awareness of breast cancer, beyond simply competing in the pageant. I am now preparing to make this more than a one-time event, with the aim of building ongoing breast cancer awareness initiatives in the local community.

Why This Project Matters

Competing in the Mrs. Universe World Finals involves significant expenses, including the competition entry fee, travel, accommodation, outfits, and training.

Of course, I will cover as much of the cost as I can myself. However, while continuing my cancer treatment, managing my daily living expenses, and working toward future breast cancer awareness initiatives, I have decided to ask for your support.

I am therefore launching this crowdfunding campaign to help cover a portion of the expenses required to participate in the world finals.

Your contributions will be used carefully to cover part of the competition entry fee, travel, accommodation, outfits, and other related expenses. If the funds raised exceed my target, the additional support will go toward the remaining expenses associated with the competition and future breast cancer awareness activities.

This is about more than making a personal dream come true.

By standing on the world stage with my shaved head, I want to share the message that even when living with an illness, we can still live authentically and stay true to who we are. I also hope to help create a society where breast cancer can be discussed openly and encourage more women to take the first step toward getting screened or performing regular breast self-checks.

Early detection of breast cancer can help preserve women's opportunities to make choices about their lives and careers.

Through these awareness initiatives, I hope to contribute to a society where women can pursue their own paths in life without having their future choices limited by illness.

I will share my personal experience not only in Japan, but also in Sri Lanka.

I would be truly grateful if you would become part of this journey through your support. Each contribution will not only help send me to the world stage, but also help me bring hope to women living with breast cancer and expand awareness initiatives that encourage early detection.

I would be deeply grateful for your warm support as I take on this challenge.

The World Stage Is a Stepping Stone, Not the Final Destination

The Mrs. Universe World Finals is an important platform for sharing my message with the world. However, competing on the world stage is not my ultimate goal.

After the competition, I plan to further expand my breast cancer awareness activities and events.

I believe it is especially important to reach younger women who may not currently have concerns about their health, as well as men, and help them understand breast cancer.

Breast cancer can affect women at any age. I believe that learning the facts from a young age can help women become more aware of the importance of screening in the future and encourage them to pay closer attention to their bodies in their everyday lives.

Turning My Experience into a Better Future

I am not living solely to fight my illness.
I want to show that even with an illness, it is possible to live authentically and stay true to who you are.

I also hope to use my experience to make a difference for the future and to tell others facing similar circumstances that they, too, can live life on their own terms.

Nothing would make me happier than knowing that my journey can offer hope to someone and inspire them to take a small step forward.

I will turn your generous support into an opportunity to share knowledge about breast cancer and bring hope to as many people as possible.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story.
