The English version follows at the end of this page.

SASHIKO GALS(サシコギャルズ)の藤原新です。

────────────────────

@New Balance

@RALPH LAUREN PURPLE LABEL

SASHIKO GALS

For International Supporters

ENGLISH VERSION

────────────────────

FROM SASHIKO GALS, TO WHAT COMES NEXT. THIS TIME, TOGETHER WITH YOU.

Hello. I’m Arata Fujiwara of SASHIKO GALS.

We started SASHIKO GALS in 2024 with a hope: to share the possibilities of sashiko with the world, from Otsuchi Town in Iwate, Japan.

About two and a half years later, we now work with global brands including Ralph Lauren, New Balance and New Era.

And now, there is something else we want to try.

We want more people to enjoy sashiko. This time, we want you to join us.

We have created a new sashiko kit as a way to begin. We are also starting SASHIKO CLUB—a place to share what we make and enjoy continuing together.

The time you enjoy can also help nurture the next makers and the places where culture continues. This project is a way to build those connections.

Our first goal is JPY 3,000,000. We will begin by launching SASHIKO CLUB online—a place to share our work and keep enjoying sashiko together.

Beyond that, we will nurture makers and connect our experience with cultural traditions across Japan.

We are looking for people who will help shape the next fifteen years with us.

────────────────────

WHAT THIS PROJECT IS ABOUT

1. From Otsuchi Town to the world: the story of SASHIKO GALS.

2. Now, it’s your turn: our sashiko kit and SASHIKO CLUB.

3. Find your own way to become part of this challenge.

4. Launching SASHIKO CLUB with our first JPY 3,000,000.

5. Beyond JPY 3,000,000: what Craft Hub aims to do.

────────────────────

YOUR ENCOURAGEMENT BROUGHT US HERE

SASHIKO GALS began its first challenge on CAMPFIRE in 2024.

The words we shared then were:

“Show what lies beyond recovery.”

We were not yet receiving work from around the world. Even so, so many people encouraged us to take that first step.

I do not think we would be here today without that support. Thank you.

Our membership has grown from fifteen to thirty-five, with makers now also in Tokyo, Osaka and elsewhere.

Since then, sashiko has reached places we could not have imagined.

Now, we want to welcome you into that circle, with a needle in your hand.

────────────────────

IT ALL BEGAN IN OTSUCHI TOWN IN 2011

I first encountered sashiko in Otsuchi Town in 2011, the year of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

After the disaster, the Otsuchi Recovery Sashiko Project began. Local women gathered, picked up needles and stitched together.

There is something I heard then that I have never forgotten.

“When I’m doing this, I can forget the painful things.”

Coming together.Talking.Concentrating on the stitch in front of you.

Sashiko was more than a way to make things.

It became work, a place to gather, and time to talk with someone. Sometimes it also offered a quiet moment to work alone.

That time has been sustained by the people who kept stitching and those who supported the activities in their community.

Immediately after the disaster, many companies became involved in recovery efforts. But as time passes, that support gradually diminishes.

SUPPORT ALONE CANNOT KEEP CULTURE ALIVE

What did it take to carry an activity that began with disaster-recovery support into the future?

It took more than words of encouragement.

There needs to be work.

For this to continue, makers need work that provides a proper income.

They need time to develop their skills.

They need an environment in which new people can learn.

And they need a way for what they make to reach someone who recognises its true value.

In 2012, I founded my company.

I wanted an activity that began with disaster-recovery support to become lasting work, rather than temporary assistance.

I believed that making things and fashion could help make that possible.

Then, in 2016, I launched KUON, a fashion brand connecting materials and techniques from across Japan with contemporary life.

Rather than preserving old things exactly as they are, we bring them into the next era with new value.

Could we put that experience to work for sashiko in Otsuchi Town, too?

That thought led us to start SASHIKO GALS.

────────────────────

“THIS IS HOW FAR SASHIKO CAN GO.”

On March 11, 2024, we launched SASHIKO GALS.

We wanted to go beyond disaster recovery.

To make sashiko work that people around the world would seek out.To share the appeal of the skills—and the personalities of the people behind them.

Sneakers. Clothing. Plush toys.

We have actively explored things that people might never have imagined decorating with sashiko.

A familiar sneaker takes on a completely different expression when stitched with sashiko. No two are ever the same.

Time accumulated in Otsuchi Town becomes a special pair of shoes for someone, somewhere in the world.

That is where we see the possibilities of sashiko.

The things SASHIKO GALS makes are not inexpensive.

To finish a single piece, a needle moves thousands, even tens of thousands of times. What goes into it is not only skill, but a great deal of time.

Time spent quietly working with your hands for someone else.Years spent building the ability to do that work.

“Turning time into value.”

We want that time to be properly valued, and makers to feel proud of their work. We want the next generation to look at it and think, “I want to do that, too.”

That is what we are working towards.

Over these two and a half years, perhaps we have shown, in some small way, just how far sashiko can go.

SASHIKO GALS will continue striving for the highest level of sashiko.

At the same time, there is another challenge we want to take on.

────────────────────

NEXT, WE WANT TO SHARE THIS: “ANYONE CAN DO SASHIKO.”

At its heart, sashiko is very simple.

You can begin with a needle and thread.

Children or adults. In Japan or anywhere in the world.

You do not have to be good at it.

If SASHIKO GALS is reaching upwards to show how far sashiko can go, we also want to reach outwards—to show that anyone can take part.

Striving for the highest level, while opening the door to more people.

We believe it is through both of these that the culture of sashiko can grow.

So this time, we are asking for more than your encouragement.

We would love you to try it yourself.

────────────────────

NOW, MAKE A PIECE OF YOUR OWN

Until now, SASHIKO GALS has shared the pieces we stitch with the world.

But this time, we want to offer more than finished work.

This time, we want you to pick up a needle yourself.

With the colours you choose.

At your own pace.

We want you to leave your own time in a piece of cloth.

To make that possible, SASHIKO GALS and itonowa—a brand of Kiyohara Co., Ltd., specialists in handicrafts and creative supplies—have developed a new sashiko kit together.

Through repeated prototypes, we worked to make the freedom we value in sashiko enjoyable for people trying it for the first time.

This is not a kit for making exactly what SASHIKO GALS makes, in exactly the same way.

It brings together what SASHIKO GALS has always valued:

Stitching freely.

Enjoying the time.

Making something your own, one stitch at a time.

We have put that beginning into a single box.

The kit contains fabric printed with a pattern, a sashiko needle and sashiko thread.

Detailed illustrated instructions are available in Japanese or English through the included QR code.

The cloth measures approximately 46 cm square.

It comes in two colours: navy and pink.

We chose asanoha, the traditional Japanese hemp-leaf pattern.

The asanoha design is printed on the cloth.

But from around halfway through, some lines are deliberately left unprinted, leaving space for you.

Begin by stitching along the printed lines.

As your hands grow more comfortable, try connecting the lines yourself.

You can follow the example.

You can change thread colours along the way.

You can add your own lines where none are drawn.

You do not have to stitch every part.

And it is fine if your stitches are not perfect.

This kit does not ask you to stitch freely from the beginning. It lets you become a little freer as you go.

Sashiko holds the time spent making it, and even the traces of hesitation, as part of the maker’s character.

So even when we begin with the same pattern, no two pieces are the same.

One row a day is enough.

You can stitch while talking with someone.

Or clear your mind and simply make one stitch after another.

“When I’m doing this, I can forget the painful things.”

I heard those words in Otsuchi Town in 2011. Now, I want more people to experience that feeling for themselves.

It is different from receiving a finished piece.

There is a kind of time that comes only from holding a needle yourself.

And the finished cloth will hold your time, rather than the time of SASHIKO GALS.

Now, make a piece of your own.

With this kit, we will open sashiko to more people.

────────────────────

WEAVING PEOPLE AND TIME TOGETHER

These days, a spare moment often means opening our phones. At work, we keep looking at emails and social media.

It feels as though we have fewer and fewer opportunities to concentrate on just one thing.

So even ten minutes a day is enough.Pick up a needle and focus on the stitch in front of you.

Put it down when you have done enough for today, and return to it tomorrow.

There is no need to hurry.

The time you accumulate little by little eventually becomes a piece of cloth.

That piece holds the time you spent moving your needle. If you made it for someone, it also holds the time you spent thinking about them.

A slightly crooked stitch, a colour you changed halfway through—perhaps you will love them precisely because you made them yourself.

Maybe sashiko brings together more than fabric and thread.

Weaving people and time together.

That is how we see it.

And once you have stitched a piece yourself, you may look at someone else’s handwork differently.

“How much time did it take to make this?”

We believe that imagining the time behind something is also an important step in carrying culture forward.

────────────────────

START ON YOUR OWN. ENJOY IT TOGETHER. SASHIKO CLUB.

We would be happy if, after stitching one piece, you thought, “I’d like to do that again.”

Sharing what comes next with someone else could make it even more enjoyable.

That is why we are starting SASHIKO CLUB.

We will begin online.

Even when we live in different places, we can show one another what we are making.

It does not need to be finished. You can simply share how far you have got today.

See someone else’s colours and think, “I like that, too.”

Then feel like picking up your own needle again.

SASHIKO GALS will share videos to answer questions and offer useful tips.

Whether you begin with our kit or your own cloth and thread, whether you are a beginner or have been stitching for years, we want to build a place where everyone can keep enjoying sashiko together.

BECOME ONE OF OUR FIRST MEMBERS

This campaign includes an online workshop reward you can join from home.

For JPY 15,000, you can join our Tokyo workshop online. Your sashiko kit will be mailed before the workshop. If you cannot attend on the day, we will provide a recording afterwards.

For those who would like to meet and stitch in person, we are also planning workshops in several cities.

We would be happy for you to begin in whatever way suits you.

We will share details of how to join SASHIKO CLUB once preparations are ready.

BECOME PART OF THIS CHALLENGE

Make something yourself. Enjoy a finished piece. Stitch together. Meet the makers.

There are several ways to join us.

These are our domestic rewards. International support is still under consideration, and physical rewards are currently available for delivery within Japan only.

MAKE YOUR OWN | Sashiko Kit — JPY 8,000

A needle and thread, and a piece that is yours alone. Beginners can follow the illustrated instructions. Choose navy or pink.

Stitch for yourself or as a gift for someone special. Enjoy the time spent making it, little by little.

SUPPORT THE ACTIVITIES | JPY 3,000 / 10,000 / 100,000

You can also support the project’s activities without receiving a physical item. Your support will first help launch SASHIKO CLUB, and beyond that, help Craft Hub nurture makers and extend its work to cultural traditions across Japan.

ENJOY A FINISHED PIECE | Hand-stitched by SASHIKO GALS — JPY 30,000

“Stitching it myself might be a little difficult.”

That is fine, too. Using a piece finished stitch by stitch by SASHIKO GALS in your everyday life is another way to take part.

CARRY A PERSONAL WISH | Initial Omamori Pouch — JPY 30,000

We will stitch one uppercase letter of your choice. Choose navy or natural ecru. Place something precious to you, or a personal wish, inside.

ADD NEW TIME TO SOMETHING YOU TREASURE | Custom Work

Custom plush toys: JPY 250,000. Custom sneakers: JPY 550,000.

We are making these custom rewards available especially for this campaign while general commissions are paused. Let SASHIKO GALS bring new life to your own cherished toy or pair of shoes.

Please consult us before pledging so we can check the materials and suitability.

BEGIN TOGETHER | Workshop with Kit — JPY 20,000 per person

Sit around a table with SASHIKO GALS for approximately ninety minutes of stitching, or about two hours including the introduction and closing.

We plan to hold workshops in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Toyama and Morioka.

There is no need to finish on the day. Take your work home and enjoy continuing.

MEET THE MAKERS | Two Special Days in Otsuchi Town — JPY 1,000,000 per person

Spend two days in Otsuchi Town with Arata Fujiwara as your guide. Explore the town and stitch together at the SASHIKO GALS office. Encounter the people and place behind the pieces.

Includes one custom pair of sneakers or plush toy. Meet at and return to Otsuchi Station. Limited to three people; dates will be arranged individually.

Please contact store@kuon.tokyo before pledging if you have any questions.

STITCH WITH YOUR COLLEAGUES | Corporate Workshop — JPY 2,000,000

Talk while working with your hands. Focus on a single stitch. Experience Japanese culture together.

Two SASHIKO GALS instructors will visit for two sessions in one day, accommodating up to forty participants in total. Kits are included; the host provides the venue.

CREATE NEW POSSIBILITIES TOGETHER | Collaboration Opportunity — JPY 5,000,000

For companies and brands that want to make something with SASHIKO GALS that none of us has seen before.

The scope and timing will be agreed through consultation. Manufacturing and other production costs are separate.

Please check each individual reward for delivery dates, quantities, event schedules, shipping coverage and other conditions. Some options will be added as preparations are completed.

For advance consultations about custom work or corporate projects, please contact store@kuon.tokyo.

WHAT OUR FIRST JPY 3,000,000 WILL BEGIN

Our first funding goal is JPY 3,000,000.

With this funding, we will begin SASHIKO CLUB’s first activities online.

A place to show what you are making.

Videos to return to when you are unsure.

Time to stitch and talk together.

We want the kit to be the beginning of an ongoing opportunity to enjoy sashiko.

After covering reward production and shipping, the costs of workshops offered as rewards, CAMPFIRE fees and related expenses, the support raised will be used to:

• Create an online place to share finished pieces and work in progress.

• Produce instructional videos and learning materials by SASHIKO GALS.

• Hold the first online sessions.

• Establish an operating structure to support participants and keep the activities going.

SASHIKO CLUB will begin with this crowdfunding campaign.

It will not be a finished place from day one.

We want to build it together, bringing your pieces and your ideas for what you would like to try.

BEYOND OUR FIRST JPY 3,000,000

First, we will bring more people into the enjoyment of sashiko through SASHIKO CLUB.

Some may want to teach someone else.

Some may eventually want to make sashiko their work.

We want to support that next step, too.

SASHIKO GALS has already begun training new makers.

When an instructor is teaching, their hands are away from production.

It also takes time before a learner can take responsibility for work.

But unless we make room for that time, the next generation cannot develop.

Working with artisans across Japan, we have encountered similar challenges again and again.

A place to make.

People to carry skills forward.

Work that makes use of those skills.

We established Craft Hub, a general incorporated association, to connect these three things.

Support raised beyond JPY 3,000,000, after covering the necessary reward costs, fees and related expenses, will go towards Craft Hub’s activities.

Our next steps will depend on the total amount raised:

JPY 5,000,000 | Move SASHIKO GALS training forward

Support the training programme already underway, including instructors’ time, materials and teaching resources for learners, to nurture people who can make sashiko their work.

JPY 10,000,000 | Share our experience of nurturing makers with other regions

Organise the teaching approaches and training experience developed through SASHIKO GALS, and work towards a structure that can connect with learners and teachers in other regions.

JPY 15,000,000 | Expand the making and learning environment in Otsuchi Town

Work towards moving to a larger space and developing the facilities needed for more substantial production and training. A place where makers and learners can gather and pass their skills to one another.

JPY 30,000,000 | Create new work in other regions and cultural traditions

Work with makers across Japan to develop products and experiences using each region’s materials and skills. We want the work that emerges to help sustain the next generation and their working environments.

FOR INTERNATIONAL SUPPORTERS

We are currently working to make international support available for this project. We will share an update on this page once arrangements are confirmed. Thank you for your patience.

Please note that international support is not guaranteed. This campaign may ultimately accept support only from within Japan.

FROM HERE, INTO THE NEXT FIFTEEN YEARS

In 2011, an activity began in Otsuchi Town with a needle and thread. It has continued for fifteen years.

Back then, how many of us could have imagined a future working with global brands?

And yet, there were people who kept stitching.People in the community who kept supporting them. And all of you who chose their work and encouraged them.

Every one of those actions brought us here.

That is why I believe in the possibilities of the next person who picks up a needle.

Culture cannot continue through people watching alone.

People who try.People who fall in love with it.People who tell someone else. And people who eventually make it their work.

I believe it is through more of these people that culture carries on to the next generation.

I do not imagine that we can change the future of culture across Japan overnight.

So, we begin with sashiko.

One person picks up a needle. That becomes a hundred, then a thousand, and perhaps one day ten thousand. Among them, the next artisan may emerge.

And we will carry what we achieve through sashiko into traditions and cultures across Japan.

These may sound like big ambitions. But the beginning is very small.

A needle. A thread.

Spend a little time making something, for yourself or for someone else. Look at what another person has made and say, “I like that.”

I would be happy if, little by little, there were more moments like these between people.

Making sashiko something more of us can share. From SASHIKO GALS, to what comes next.

Weaving people and time together.

The next fifteen years, together with you.

Let’s make that first stitch together.

Thank you for being part of this.
