ARTODRIA

Project Overview

Would you like to fall in love all over again with the otaku girls who used to draw in the corner of the classroom?

Girlfailure Art Club is a visual novel about falling in love with the cringey otaku girls from back in the day.

We are running this crowdfunding campaign to improve the quality of the game, with more illustrations, music, and video content, and deliver an unforgettable, endearingly cringey high school experience.

Why We Are Crowdfunding

Hello, we're ARTODRIA, an indie game label. Thank you for your interest in this project. We are currently developing our first title, the romance visual novel Girlfailure Art Club.

ARTODRIA is an independent game label run by the game's creator, Todoki Uka. Uka handles the concept, story, character design, in-game scripting, and more, working with artists, translators, composers, and other contributors to develop the game.

There are many languages we would like to support and ideas we would like to realize, but our development budget and the scope of what we can do are limited.

“We want to show this scene through an event illustration, not just text.”

“We want to create music that people will still want to listen to years after finishing the game.”

“We don't want language or hardware differences to stop people from playing.”

We are launching this crowdfunding campaign to make as many of these ideas as possible a reality.

Your support will go toward developing and improving the game. It will help us expand the illustrations, music, and video content beyond what would normally be possible for a project of this scale, and pursue ways to make the game available to more players.

Current Development Progress

The Steam store page and teaser trailer are now available, and development of the full game is underway. The story has already been finalized. Our next steps include producing the artwork and music, implementing the in-game scripts, and translating the game.

What Is Girlfailure Art Club?

Girlfailure Art Club is a visual novel about falling in love with the cringey otaku girls from back in the day.

The protagonist—you—joined the tennis club at the municipal Akeba Academy, hoping to finally enjoy the high school life you'd dreamed of. But you couldn't fit in with the upbeat crowd, so you quit. Since school rules require every student to join a club, you need to find another one. You choose the art club because it seems the most laid-back, but...

“HEEEEEY! A new member at this time of year? What kind of dating sim is this?! ←”

“Hey, can someone rein in this hopeless horndog?”

“Au, au... Is this a heart-pounding romantic comedy?”

“Hmph. Ridiculous...”

You're the only boy. Every art club member waiting for you is an otaku girl?! There's a subculture-loving girl who calls herself “boku,” an “ore”-using girl with over-the-top comebacks, an anime-voiced oddball, and a self-insert fangirl with an ominous smile... These distinctive heroines give you the mortifying nickname “Prince Senpai,” and your days as their favorite plaything begin.

Showing each other your sketchbooks, going to karaoke, visiting anime shops... Who will you fall in love with in this dream of a school club? Packed with otaku culture from the 2010s, the story is sure to give you secondhand embarrassment. Make your choices and aim for the ending you want.

Cringey memories? That's fine! Relive those endearingly cringey teenage years in a romance adventure that's as cute as it is embarrassing!

Enjoy falling in love with these distinctive otaku girls, written by a scenario writer who was an art club girl herself during her school days.

Characters

Rinne: The Alt-Girl in Red Glasses

“I won't bury my bones in a city where all you can do for fun is karaoke or pachinko, I'll tell you that much.”

Rinne Murata

Second-year student. She's a silent girl who's in the same class as you.
She spends all her time drawing alone, aiming to get into a national university for the arts. She's obsessed with underground subcultures and dreams of living alone in Tokyo. She looks down on the other club members who only watch mainstream anime. Also, she has zero friends.

Shoko: The Reaction Queen

"WAIT A GOSH DARN SECOND! D'you think I'm some kind of animal in heat?! How dare you!"

Shoko Hasegawa

Third-year student and the art club's vice-president. An enthusiastic enjoyer of comedy manga, she can't help but react with perfect comedic timing to anything. Despite her aggressive behavior,  she has low self-esteem and is very self-conscious about her height and physique. She says that her dream job is having no job, but she has a secret dream that she's never told anyone.

Kana: The Cute-Voiced Quirky One

“Could you be... my very own sweet prince?”

Kana Kitano

A first-year student. She has a high-pitched, cute voice and is a bit cloud-headed.  Her dream is becoming a voice actress. She often says things like "auu auu" and "nano desu," and says sound effects out loud. The other girls in the club think she's as adorable as an angel and treat her accordingly. She fell in love at first sight with you, whom she calls "Prince Senpai."She has no friends in her own class.

Yurie: The Dark-Smiling Fangirl

“Hey, guys—how about you start showing some restraint? ^^”

Yurie Ishihara

Third-year student and the art club's president. She projects a soft and gentle aura, just to become terrifying as soon as she gets angry. She is best friends with Shoko. She likes self-inserting in fiction, and she's especially obsessed with the character "Kyoya Tobari" from the hit series "Hitman Re-bored: Family Matters". She is a top-ranking writer on the "Fortune Tellers United" fanfiction site. As you could never possibly surpass Kyoya Tobari in her eyes, she is not a romanceable character in the game.

The Protagonist (You)

“Walking home together would start rumors... That'd be embarrassing.”

Default name: Mamoru Gasai
Note: The name can be changed. The protagonist has no in-game character sprite.

A second-year student.Joined the tennis club during his first year at Akeba Academy, but he couldn't handle the extroverted energy there and transferred to the art club at the start of his second year. Upon joining, he promptly became the art club girls' toy and was immediately saddled with the humiliating nickname of "Prince Senpai." He happens to be self-conscious about his height. Also, although he'd never admit it, he's secretly into complicated otaku girls.

Funding Goal and Stretch Goals

Our initial funding goal is ¥2,000,000. We will work on the following additions as the total amount pledged reaches each goal.

Goal Total Contents
1st Goal ¥2 million
(USD12,600)
10 Additional Event CGs
2nd Goal ¥5 million
(USD31,600)
Additional Language Support
3rd Goal ¥8 million
(USD50,500)
Additional Illustrations and Enhanced Visuals for the Opening Movie
4th Goal ¥10 million
(USD63,200)
Original Theme Song and Background Music by Tenmon

※ USD amounts are estimates based on an exchange rate of US$1 = ¥158.3.
Note: Each amount is a cumulative pledge total, not an additional amount required for that individual goal. Your support will be used to fulfill the stretch goals we reach and to fund game development as a whole, improving the overall quality of the finished game. The amounts assigned to individual goals, and the differences between them, do not directly represent the production costs or commission fees for each addition.

Goal 1 | ¥2,000,000 (USD12,600) Total Pledged: 10 Additional Event CGs

We will add 10 event illustrations to the current production plan for the game. We currently expect around 30 event CGs; with 10 more, we plan to produce 40 in total. These additional CGs will primarily be used to make the presentation of each ending more dramatic.

Goal 2 | ¥5,000,000 (USD31,600) Total Pledged: Additional Language Support

We will translate the game into additional languages beyond the six currently planned. Girlfailure Art Club is a particularly challenging title to translate, requiring an understanding of Japanese school life and otaku culture in the 2010s. Even so, we believe that the secondhand embarrassment and nostalgia of endearingly cringey teenage years are universal. By adding more languages, we hope to give more Prince Senpais the chance to meet these girls all over again.

Note: Additional languages will be selected based on factors such as wishlist numbers.

Goal 3 | ¥8,000,000 (USD50,500) Total Pledged: Additional Illustrations and Enhanced Visuals for the Opening Movie

We will create additional illustrations and visual assets for the opening movie currently in production, with the aim of bringing out more of the appeal of its music and story. The opening movie itself will be produced regardless of whether this goal is reached; this goal will allow us to enhance its visuals with additional assets.

Goal 4 | ¥10,000,000 (USD63,200) Total Pledged: Original Theme Song and Background Music by Tenmon

Girlfailure Art Club currently uses free music tracks for its background music. With this stretch goal, composer Tenmon will create an original theme song and background music specifically for the game. Your support will cover not only composition and arrangement, but also the costs of bringing the music to completion, including commissioning a vocalist, recording instruments, recording sessions, mixing, and mastering.

Tenmon has composed music for numerous works, including the animated film 5 Centimeters per Second and the visual novels ef and eden*. We hope to create music that adds emotional depth to the game's key scenes and stays with you alongside the story, so that you will remember the music of Girlfailure Art Club years—even decades—after finishing the game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Where will I be able to play the game?

A. We are initially planning a Steam release for Windows PCs. With your support, we hope to bring the game to as many platforms as possible. The copy of the game included in this campaign's rewards is the Steam (Windows) version.

Q. Which languages will the game support?

A. We plan to support Japanese, English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, and Brazilian Portuguese. If the relevant stretch goal is reached, additional languages will be selected based on factors such as wishlist numbers.

Q. Will reaching a stretch goal add anything to my rewards?

A. Stretch goals are primarily intended to improve the game and expand its availability and related content. If any rewards are added or changed, we will separately announce what is changing and which tiers are affected. Please check the rewards listed in each tier before pledging.

Q. Can I support the project from outside Japan?

A. Yes. You can support the project and receive rewards from outside Japan by using tenso.com.

Note: Customs duties may apply depending on the destination. As a general rule, these are the backer's responsibility. Please check your country's customs rules in advance.

Q. Are there ways to support the project without making a financial contribution?

A. Of course! Adding the game to your Steam wishlist, sharing it on social media, and recommending it to friends are all very welcome forms of support. We would also love to hear which characters caught your attention or what memories of your school days the game brings back.

Q. I already supported the development blog on FANBOX. Are there any rewards for existing supporters?

A. At first, we felt that running a crowdfunding campaign would be difficult because we were concerned about rising printing costs and faced challenges with shipping rewards overseas and securing the staff and operational support needed to run a campaign. After receiving inquiries from people who wanted to support the project, we began accepting support for game development through FANBOX in April.

In September, CAMPFIRE formally offered to support us with merchandise production and shipping. With help addressing the issues that had previously made a campaign difficult, we decided to launch this crowdfunding project.

As a thank-you to those who have already supported us through FANBOX, we will ship rewards individually based on each person's total contributions from April through September. Details about the contents and shipping schedule will be announced on FANBOX or in Project Updates.

Going forward, we will also consolidate our development blog updates in CAMPFIRE's “Project Updates” section. To avoid confusion during this transition, we will temporarily make FANBOX private as of the end of September. We apologize for the change affecting those who have supported our work for a long time, and appreciate your understanding.

Q. Voice acting is not listed as a stretch goal. Does that mean there are no plans to add it in the future?

A. Please stay tuned for further announcements.

A Final Message

Thank you very much for reading this far. I am the creator behind ARTODRIA, and I spent my school years in the art club, having what felt like the cringiest adolescence of all. I started making this game because I wanted to preserve those intense yet vibrant days in the form of a coming-of-age romance visual novel.

As an independently developed game, it focuses on relatable experiences specific to that era and the details that come from having lived through it firsthand.

Whether you spent your own endearingly cringey teenage years in an art club, looked down on girls like these from a cynical distance, or longed for teenage years like that but never took the first step, we want to make a game you can enjoy. You might start by laughing and thinking, “What is with these girls?!”—only to realize that one of them has become important to you. That is the kind of romance game we want to deliver.

The English subtitle, “Girlfailure Art Club,” reflects the game's central theme: rather than dismissing these girls as failures because they struggle socially and sometimes make mistakes that cannot simply be brushed off as “cute,” we want to portray them with affection, awkwardness and all.

If this game helps someone accept who they used to be, and if players come to genuinely love the girls in the art club, I could ask for nothing more as a creator.

We hope to turn your support into compelling event CGs, music, and videos, and give it back to you in the form of the finished game.

Prince Senpai, would you like to relive your school days in the Akeba Art Club?

Thank you for supporting and cheering on Girlfailure Art Club.
