The man they called a young genius, master swordsmith Yoshikazu Yoshihara. Japanese swordsmith documentary project.

At the age of 36, Yoshikazu Yoshihara was pronounced the youngest to receive the highest level of swordsmith mastery. He was known for his blade style referred to as Kawazukochouji, which fascinated fans throughout the world. Documenting the last swordsmith. Yoshikazu passed away in 2018 at the age of 51. Through this documentary, we hope to share his soul-imbedded masterpieces and legacy with people for thousands of years to come. The footage is of the last four years prior to his passing.

Introduction 

Swordsmith Yoshikazu Yoshihara, is a world renowned artisan who Japan is proud to call its own, and also a friend of mine.

義一の作刀をドキュメンタリー映像にし世界に日本刀や文化、
そして刀匠・吉原義一を広めたいと思い2016年から撮影していたものです。
In hopes to share with the world, the Japanese culture and tradition of sword making, and to expand the universal recognition of Yoshikazu, we began shooting this project in 2016.

本プロジェクトは、制作中に病を患い若くして他界してしまった義一の最後の作「一期一会」の映像作品化および販売展開を応援していただくものです。一時は制作もどうかとも思いましたが、「一期一会の映像化頼むね」と言い残し治療に旅立ったので、この場を借りて作品化させていただきたく思います。クラウドファンディングを使うのは、正直、資金面も沢山支援して欲しいですが、より多くの人に知ってもらいたい思いが強いです。お知り合いにも、是非シェアして拡散して下さい。また、制作に時間がかかってしまい、最初で最後の作品となるため、欲しい撮影シーンが増えてしまい、さらに時間がかかってしまいました。制作期間は４年となってしまいました。

The goal of this project was to create a visual piece documenting the creation of Yoshikazu’s final piece titled Ichigo-Ichieh, a Japanese phrase which has the English nuance of “for this time only”, “never again”, “one chance” or “Once in a lifetime” and to accomplish sales and distribution of this documentary. Due to his declining health conditions, there was a time where I hesitated and contemplated whether to continue with this project or not, but with his words “I’m counting on you for the completion of this documenting Ichigo-Ichieh” as he headed to his treatment, I feel it is my duty to see this project to the end. The reason we are choosing this platform is not only because we need the support and funding, but because I strongly wish for this project to reach as many people as possible. We would love for you to share and spread the word. Unfortunately, because we had spent so much time developing, it has become our first and last project. Therefore, there we many scenes we wanted to keep and incorporate, resulting in a production period of four years.

本作品で作った刀「一期一会」は、何千年もの先の人々にこの刀を受け継いでほしいと言う義一の願いが込められ、銘を切られております。
このドキュメンタリー作品も、その想いとともに義一が人生をかけた「日本刀」という文化と日本刀「一期一会」ともに未来へと繋げられればという想いで制作しております。　監督：田中慶幸

This piece, Yoshikazu’s last work Ichigo-Ichieh was created with his hopes of it being passed down for thousands of years, for generations to come. We feel the same about our documentary. We hope to pass on to future generations, his passion for and the culture of Japanese swords which he dedicated his life to, and the legacy of his final masterpiece Ichigo- Ichieh. 刀匠・吉原義一　1967年3月29日生まれ
義一は、刀鍛冶の名門、吉原家に４代目として生まれた。
March 29th , 1967 Swordsmith, Yoshikazu Yoshiwara was born he was born into the prestigious Yoshiwara swordsmiths family, as fourth generation.

父は、世界的に有名な無監査・刀鍛冶 吉原義人（よしはら・よしんど）。
曾祖父は、1940年当時「現代刀匠人気大番付」で、東の横綱とされた刀匠界の重鎮、初代・吉原國家。（よしはら・くにいえ）
His father Yoshindo Yoshihara was a world-famous swordsmith, obtaining the highest rank.
In the 1940’s his great-grandfather Kuniie Yoshihara, the first-generation founder was said to be the most popular modern swordsmith of his time, often given the nickname “Yokozuna of the East”, a term used in sumo for the ranking champion.

18歳で刀鍛冶として修行に入り、わずか５年という最短の修行期間で刀匠としての難関に合格。初出品した新作名刀展では「努力賞」と「新人賞」を受賞、その後、快挙と言われる１０年連続の特賞を受賞した。36歳の時、刀剣界の最高位、「無鑑査」となった。
これは、史上最年少での無監査認定となり、この記録は未だ破られていない。さらに、４２歳の時、東京都葛飾区の指定無形文化財にも認定。義一は、日本が誇る伝統の日本刀文化を受け継ぐ若きリーダーでした。
Yoshikazu began his apprenticeship at the age of 18, and within only five years successfully passed the exam of being named an official master swordsmith. In his first submission of work entered to the “New Master Swords Exhibition”, he received both the New-comer Award and the Best Effort Award. There on after, he achieved receiving the Special Award for ten consecutive years. At the age of 36, he received the title of Mukansa, the highest ranking given in the swordsmith world. This marked the world record of the youngest Master Swordsmith, and this record has yet been broken. Also, at the age of 42, he was named an intangible cultural asset by the Tokyo Katsushika ward. Yoshikazu was recognized as the next generation leader of his field, carrying on the Japanese culture of sword making.

義一は、「蛙子丁子」（かわずこちょうじ）という刃文を得意とする。「蛙子丁子」とは、おたまじゃくしの形に似た丁子乱れ刃で、平安時代から室町時代の備前伝の特徴的な刃文。
丁子乱れとはスパイスとしても使われる植物・丁子（clove）の実の形からきている。
Yoshikazu’s specialty was a blade type called the Kawazu Ko Chouji. “kawazu” being the Japanese word for “frog”, and “ko” translating to “child”, this blade resembles a tadpole. This type of sword was very characteristic of the Heian-Period (794-1185) to the Muromachi Period (1333- 1573). “Chouji” refers to the spice “cloves” who’s resemblance also added to this blade’s characteristics.

刀匠・吉原義一の「一期一会」の作刀をじっくりとドキュメンタリーとして映像作品化します。
本編１時間４７分（予定）、およびDVD特典映像として「刀匠吉原義一が教える日本刀の手入れ・鑑賞法」を制作。（制作中につき変わる場合がございます。）内容は、作刀を中心に義一の人柄・人気の秘密が垣間見られるものとなっております。過去に日本刀の作刀だけのドキュメンタリーでこの長編は存在しません。

本来は、上映会などイベント実施も考えたく、コロナ禍の状況をみておりましたが、終息のメドがたたないため当クラウドファンディング限定版DVDBOXの販売や「当プロジェクト限定先行WEB配信」をすることといたします。

What we want to achieve through this project:

To capture and document in detail, Master Swordsmith Yoshikazu Yoshihara’s process of creating his final piece, Ichigo Ichie.
Feature film lenghth: 1hour 47 minutes (estimated) plus DVD Bonus features which include how to enjoy your Japanese sword and how to clean and maintain a Japanese sword, explain by Yoshikazu. (Details are subject to minor changes as it is still in the process of completion.) The documentary focuses on Yoshikazu’s creative process, showcasing his personality and the reasons for his popularity. There has never been a documentary created of this length, on the subject of Japanese Swordsmith.
We had initially envisioned premier events and promotions of that sort to showcase and introduce this project, but due to the current circumstances of COVID, and no definite end in site we have opted to create a crowdfunding limited edition DVD box set, and offer access controlled web streaming.

To honor Yoshikazu’s hopes of passing on his sword and legacy to the future generations, a thousand years from now, we have chosen to box the DVD in handcrafted Paulwonia wood boxes which is one of Japan’s traditional crafts.

伝統の職人さんのハンドメイドにより個体差はあるかと思いますが空気が漏れずぴったりと蓋が閉まります。見る角度によっては、蓋の継ぎ目も分かりにくい程。
（個体差・温度湿度など環境によっても変化する場合がございます。）
Due to the nature of handcrafted products, there may be slight variations, but when the lid is closed, it will create an airtight boxing for your safekeeping. The craftsmanship is so precise that depending on the angle, you may not even see the seams of the closure.
(Individual differences, climate, humidity may also create some change and vairences in the boxes.)

桐の箱は「密閉性」があり、かつ、桐の材質が呼吸をしているため湿度や気温など環境の変化から収納するDVDを長い期間にわたり守ります。
また、桐は、タンニン・パウロニン・セサミンを含んでおり、腐りにくく、虫もつきにくく抗菌性もあると言われ、保存に適する材質として古くから日本では愛用されております。材質はとても軽いのに燃えにくい特徴もあります。
Paulownia wood, when constructed precisely has an airtight quality, at the same time the wood material itself is breathable, therefor maintains an optimal environment for the enclosed DVD, protecting it from humidity, temperature and other climate conditions for long periods.
Also, Paulownia wood is known to have antibacterial properties, also repelling bugs, and has been considered a favorable choice of storage material in Japan for many years. The wood is very light, and yet not easily burnable.

DVDの発送について、文部科学省の「選定」審査を受ける予定です。 コロナ禍により、審議委員会が開催休止、審査待ちが続いております。 審査終了まで、規定で作品の発売ができないため、お待たせする場合がございます。 進捗はご報告させていただきます。

Concerning about challenging this work and shipping of DVD: 

We are planing to receive the judging of selection from “Ministry of education” now on. As the committee’s judge is closing because of Covid-19, we are waiting for the judging. In case of long terms of judging, we may take time to sell DVD. We always for sure inform the process of the status.
