日本にバリアフリー教養大学を設立するというお話を伺い、大変嬉しく思っております。

 英国では近年障害のある学生が大学に進学して、夢を叶えるということに関して、大きく前進してきました。しかし、バリアフリー教養大学のような広範囲な困難を抱える人々のことを網羅的に考えた大学はありません。

 バリアフリー教養大学は、教員の多くが困難を抱える当事者であるとのこと、一層励まされる思いです。 斉藤くるみ先生をはじめとする皆様のご尽力により、バリアフリー教養大学が大きな成果をあげ、国際的なモデルとなっていくことは間違いないでしょう。

I am delighted to learn of the project to open a Barrier-Free Liberal Arts University in Japan. We in the UK have made advances in recent years in enabling students with disabilities to realise their ambitions within existing universities and colleges, but we have no single institution specifically dedicated to such a comprehensive range of disadvantaged students. It is especially encouraging to know that a large proportion of the faculty will themselves be disadvantaged. Under the guidance of Professor Saito and her colleagues, the University will, I am confident, enjoy success and will become a model for other countries to emulate.
