私が社会開発の仕事を始めたのは、自分自身が地域で苦しむ人々を目の当たりにしてきたからです。
2005年、大規模な立ち退き政策の影響で、多くの家族が住む場所を失い、子どもたちは学校を中退し、街をさまようようになりました。規律も、希望も、将来の機会も失った若者たちは、薬物乱用や犯罪、売春、そして若年結婚といった問題に巻き込まれやすくなりました。
私は、一緒に育った友人たちが、一夜にして将来を失っていく姿を目の当たりにしたのです。
私たちには多くのものはありませんでした。しかし、お互いを支え合う仲間がいました。 そこで、私たちは「スポーツこそが現状を打破する答えになり得る」と考えました。
単に子どもたちを忙しくさせるためではありません。安心して過ごせる居場所をつくり、学び、心を癒やし、再び夢を持てるようにするためでした。 スポーツは、お金や立派な施設がなくても始められる唯一のものでした。
必要なのは、ボール一つ、少しの空き地、そしてお互いを信じる気持ちだけ。
その「信じる力」こそが、YASDの始まりとなったのです。
Q1 Why did you start working in social development?
I started working in social development because I lived the reality we are trying to change.
In 2005, as a result of the operation families lost their homes, children dropped out of school and began roaming the streets. Without structure, without hope, and without opportunity, young people became vulnerable to drug abuse, crime, prostitution, and early marriage. I saw friends — children I grew up with — lose their futures overnight.
We didn't have much, but we had each other. A group of us as young people decided that sport could be our answer. Not just to keep kids busy, but to create a safe space where they could learn, heal, and dream again. Sport was the one thing we could offer that didn't require money or infrastructure — just a ball, a patch of ground, and belief in one another. That belief became YASD.
誇りに思う瞬間は数え切れないほどあります。
しかし、私が最も感動するのは、YASDに来た子どもたちが成長し、地域のリーダーや教育者、そして次の世代のロールモデルになっていく姿です。
また、「自分には学校へ通う未来なんてない」と思っていた子どもたちが、小学校や中学校を卒業する姿を見るたびに、この活動の意味を改めて実感します。
Q2 What achievement or activity of YASD are you most proud of?
There are many moments that fill me with pride, but what moves me most is seeing the children who came to YASD grow into community leaders, educators, and role models, children who thought they would never go to school finish primary and secondary school.
