Having translated Seiichi Yashiro's The Courtesan Miyagino (1966) for Half a Century of Japanese Theater Vol. VIII edited by the Japan Playwrights Association, I was deeply interested in Director Tatsuji Yamazaki's film version, which featured Yashiro's actor-daughter as Miyagino, the hooker with a heart of gold.

I was delighted to find that the director had cut his way through the linear structure of the original, shattering time. Furthermore, he re-styled some sets into pseudo-kabuki, photo-shoot, or pop-up papercraft, with black-clad assistants lurking in the corners.

It has been a great challenge, pleasure, and honor to translate The Two Portraits of Miyagino.

私は、矢代静一の戯曲『宮城野』（1966）を翻訳したこともあって、矢代の愛娘が、慈悲深い心を持つ主人公・宮城野を演じる山﨑達璽監督の映画版に深く興味を持ちました。

山﨑監督はこの映画で、オリジナルの戯曲が持つ直線的な時間構造を壊すことで新境地を切り拓いています。さらに、監督は黒衣を片隅に忍ばせ、それは歌舞伎を模したり、静的な構図だったり、飛び出る紙細工（立版古）などの斬新な表現技法を用いており、とても感銘を受けました。

非常に大きな挑戦となりましたが、このたび、映画版『宮城野』（英語題“Two Portraits of Miyagino”）の翻訳に携わることができ、誠に光栄に存じます。
